Windprotection

I've decided to go for the NTG-1 for now, as I'll most probably do more outdoors than indoors so I think it suites my situation better than the Oktava. I don't think I will ever need the batteries of the NTG-2, as it will always be attached to my camera (Canon XH-A1).
As boom pole I decided to get the K-Tek KE110CCR.

Now I need some windprotection, of course I'm low on money so trying to get the best for not too much money. I basically see 3 options;
Rycote S-Series 300
K-Tek Zeppeling with K-GPS suspension
K-Tek K-Zep

Is there any difference between those 3? And if so, is the difference worth the price difference (although it's not too much)?
And one last question just to be sure... do all 3 offer the same? So good shockmount and good windprotection.

Thanks for helping me out!

i basically need the same thing for my Rode also. haven't been able to find anybody on the forum that has had experience with those wind protection systems. i'm leaning more towards this one from trew audio

Yeah that's the third one I posted. I'm leaning towards the Rycote now, but actually just because it's newer, better known brand in windprotection and looks nicer ;)

So I don't have any real pro's or con's. Would be nice if someone could post experiences on (one of) those kits!

What's the advantage of a blimp over just sticking a dead cat over the mic? Works in stronger wind?

A blimp surrounds the mic (which is on a shock mount) and doesn't allow the furry to touch it. The fur surrounds the blimp/zeppelin and not the mic. This creates an air space surrounding the mic itself. With a blimp you can use various densities of fur depending on the wind.

It cuts wind noise much more than just foam or fur.

For those on a truly limited budget, try this: http://www.instructables.com/id/Microphone-Blimp/

OK, I have the Rycote S-series. Really good and simple shockmount, good isolation and fits mikes 19-25mm. Very fast to change mikes. Also has handle if you want to hold it and point at someone in a crowd.
Made of very tough high quality plastic.
Balance could be a problem with it. I took mine apart and turned the handle around... British always doing things backward. Takes some adjusting it to get the balance to feel right.
I also have a couple of K-Tek KSM and KSSM shockmounts, and I think the K-tek GPS is a better shockmount.

The mike I used with it didn't fit right....Even though Rycote said for such and such mike, use kit # XYZ. kept bumping the front of mike or rear of included XLR. I finally cut off the XLR and put on a lightweight K-tek right angle female XLR to plug the mike into. This gave more room inside and also improved the balance.
K-Tek looks good too..........

One other complaint about the Rycote........ it doesn't have the same foam plus fur the Rycote Softies do...... it just has the fur. I would like it to have more wind protection. I have since added a quarter inch of air conditioning foam on the inside of the "pods" to give more protection. The pods are so large you could almost add a foam windscreen right on the mike, and then put the pod over it........ for all you out in the desert were the wind blows like a mofo..........

Thanks a lot for your answers, and the links to those reviews! It really gave me some insight on how the Rycote S-Series works.

For now I'm leaning towards the K-Tek as it offers more windprotection, I was actually assuming the S-Series also had foam plus fur. Since it has not, I think the K-Tek should give me the completer deal.

Rycote has foam on the ends uder the fur, same as K-tek. Foam tip. I don't think any of them have foam like the Rycote softie.

and the dead air inside is what you are after and what makes the zep more effective than the softie. I've got the k-tek one (there is only one k-tek zep which comes in three sizes) and it looks pretty similiar to the rycote s-series, although I haven't done much comparing of the two.

which k-tek are you gonna go with dionysos?
Sorry for the late response, but I've picked the K-tek from B&H. But only because I was already ordering quite some stuff from them, so the shipping costs would be quite a lot lower than ordering it at trew, alone.

So far it seems very nice, however I still have to test it a bit more :).

are you using the rode ntg with it? how's the performance outside in winds and background ambiance like cars and trucks driving by, etc?

Sorry I'm just now seeing your question filmboy - missed it somehow. Yeah I'm using it with the NTG-1 and it works great to cut wind noise. I've been out in winds gusting to 20-25 and no wind noise. Havent tried anything more than that. It wont do crap for background ambience. No windjammer will.

cool thanks...so have you used the ntg-1 in situations where there's a lot of background ambience like maybe in a restaurant or a busy street, etc? how well did it perform?

i've havent had too many outdoor shoots lately since i recently got my ntg-1, but i was using the octava outdoors (all i had at the time) before i got it and it picked up EVERY little noise - however it's flawless on everything i shot indoors.

In a busy environment there's definitely alot of background noise and it does pick it up. I ran a cardioid (akg ck91 next to me ntg1 for fun at my nephews birthday party (quite a few people in a room not big enough for them) and the ntg obviously did much better at focusing on what it was pointed at. The audio from the 91 was useless for interviews but great for "happy birthday" and the ntg1 did a great job supressing the background noise so you could understand the person talking. Granted I was using a wideangle and getting close to my subjects so the mic would be close enough too. And all of the background noise was still there but much more ambient. With the 91 it was just chaotic sounding with all of the bg noise.
