Windows Media uprez?

Using Avid Xpress Pro HD v5.1.6 . . .

I'd like to uprez my film to a Windows Media HD movie. I need step-by-step instructions. And can the resulting file be easily encoded into MPEG-2 for DVD authoring? My project is 24PA, 16x9. I just want to preserve a master in the best quality format I have available to me.

Thanks,

Since the footage was shot in DV25 then that's the most resolution that the footage can have. Upressing it will give you a master with more pixles, but not more resolution. Esspecially if you're encoding to DVD it's best to start with the DV25 footage and encode from that instead of encoding it once to Windows Media HD, and then again to DVD.

Even capturing 1:1 with Mojo from a MiniDV source is not giving you any more resolution (arguably less) than capturing over firewire.

Additionally, Windows Media is such a closed format that it's hard to find apps that will encode from it.

My opinion is that it's best to stay with MiniDV masters, unless you absolutely need to store it as a digital file and then I'd use Quicktime Uncompressed.

Hope that helps.

Solutions like Algolith are no doubt of higher quality than the resize effect built into Xpress Pro, or simply encoding to a larger frame size, so if you need to do an uprez on your PC for HD levels, then I'd definitely go with something like that.

Still I would only do it if I had a purpose (someone requesting an HD file, making a Windows Media HD DVD, etc) instead of using it to make a master.
