Windows 8

So I guess the rule of developing something to do two different things won't be as good as designing something to do one thing, doesn't apply here.

What's the difference between a tablet and a computer? Just screen size and input. Screen size is easy taken care of - we do it all the time with today's OS's. The only real "trick" is making an interface that works with touch input and mouse/keyboard input. I don't see why that is necessarily so hard.

Regarding all that virus talk, your NLE or any other computer you work/make money with should never be connected to the Internet. So you don´t need any anti-virus software running in the background and you also can turn of a lot of stuff that is eating resources. On the other hand, I have my web-surfing computer running with an unpatched XP-pro since donkeys years, and never had a real virus problem.

The virus problem is so exaggerated. I have five or six computers in my house all running Vista or 7 and none have real-time virus protection. We just don't watch porn and then scan each one every month or so (usually only finding a handful of cookie malware type things anyway).

Adobe has "Edge" which should help with the lack of Flash on some basic fronts.
I was a designer in Flash but things do change.
Not always for the better... Silverlight

Umm... tablets have severely limit hardware capabilities and thus OSes have to compromise on features to limit their resource draw...

Tablets will never have the speed and efficiency of Laptop, and Laptop will never have the speed and efficiency of Desktops. Laptops are essentially 2 or 3 years behind Desktops in hardware capabilities. When laptops catch-up, desktops are then years ahead of where they were. Same will be true for tablets.

By making a hybrid OS they're going to have cut somewhere on the Desktop OS end, to work towards making the OS useable on tablets and phones.

You know the processor in the iphone and ipad is a single core 1 GHz processor (iphone 5 will be 1GHz dual-core). They can get a way with that because of the severely limited OS, and small simple apps that use very limited hardware resources.

also I've never seen anyone hold a desktop or laptop on its side making the screen a portrait orientation like tablets

portrait means a huge difference when it comes to web design

Maybe the iPad has limited hardware, but there is some insane stuff going on in other tablets these days with dual-core CPU's and whatnot.

Today's tablets are faster than laptops were not too many years ago...

I know a couple of people for whom their iPad has effectively replaced their laptop for most circumstances. These are, by the way, not power users. But if all you do is surf the internet and write reports and watch kitten videos on Youtube, a tablet that you can plug into a keyboard and mouse sounds pretty tempting as a laptop replacement.
