Ive been using Windows 7 64bit for long time now an its kinda bothering me. What OS are you guys using ? I dont like the whole touchscreen aspect of the Windows 8 ect. Is there any performance increase with using Windows 8 or even windows 10 if its available?

Thanks

I'm using 8.1 and I love it. It took some getting used to, but honestly, I keep my start screen blank and operate from the desktop. If I need to launch an app that isn't in my startbar, I just hit the Windows key and type what I'm looking for. That's the only time I visit the start screen

I just downloaded the new Developers' Beta version of Windows 10. It's a wonderful fast interface, it's like a mixture of the best of 7 and the best of 8, getting rid of all the annoying 8 stuff like the start screen. It's fast, elegant, smooth, runs all my Apps/NLEs that were for Win 7.

But wait, don't jump on the Developers' Beta version now, wait until it's officially out as there are obvious bugs here and there that will be removed.

All in all I predict a big success for Windows 10. It's very elegant and fast.

If you keep Win 7 up to date, you may get an announcement for a free upgrade to Win 10. It just popped up a week or so ago on both my laptop and workstation with the most recent updates.

From what little I've read, the free version maybe be stripped of features. Check it out thoroughly before installing the free one. If they offer a cheap paid upgrade, that one might be better once your applications support it.

After that I've read good things about 10 but haven't had the time to try the beta version yet.

There's nothing wrong with win8.1. It's at least as stable as win7, it's faster, you can use a few commands and have it log you into the desktop so it looks just like win7. It has a few different ways of doing things, because that's what Microsoft does each upgrade. It's no big deal.

For the record, my old copy of the Adobe Production Premium Suite CS6 runs just fine under win8.1. Fast and stable.

I personally (as a working desktop technician) will enter my grave having NEVER installed windblows 8 on any of my equipment.

That's too bad, it's a decent OS, and might be a great OS if you have a touch display. Everyone I know that isn't a complete set in their ways technology bumbler has adjusted and likes it. 8.1 defaults to desktop when there is a keyboard and mouse connected, so no screwing around for older style desktop applications. The newer style stuff runs much faster. This may be the only OS from Windows that actually decreased hardware speeds and capabilities, the old standard of faster/bigger/more everything has gone away.

Hi
As always, it depends. In this case on what software you want to run. Check with your software venders that the versions you own (or rent) will run under Windows 8.1. Windows 8.1 is really just a big update on Windows 7. Meaning the code base is mostly the same and mostly everything that runs under Windows 7 will now run under Windows 8.1. There are exceptions, so check. I highly recommend the free program Classic Shell that makes Windows 8.1 look like Windows 7. Microsoft puts out a free update readiness tool that scans your computer and looks for conflicts regarding updates, works well.

I would wait and let other people feel the pain with Windows 10... Although it also is really mostly an update rather than a whole new code base. I might guess it will be fine. Oh, do you really want to risk everything on my "might guess". I hope not.

Best luck, let us know.

For $5 the Stardock "Start8" app is a great bargoon for those of us working with Windows 8 or 8.1 that want the functionality of the Windows 7 desktop. I've been using it for more than a year now and it's made Windows 8 totally workable for me.

Just came back to pc after 5 years on mac, and I find windows 8.1 to be perfectly fine. Once you learn how to navigate around its pretty fast. The search app function works well.....
