Win XP is %$*%&@ up!

Just read your specs - congrats on a very nice machine. You say it does not go online, yet reports a firefox error, and I suspect you do go online for updates, etc.

What a/v program?? malware strikes in milliseconds and I've had it appear in factory pressed program installation CD's

Are you turning the a/v program completely off for the duration of a software install? Trend Micro messes with me constantly when I forget, breaks most installs. Have used them for years but ready to dump.

DO NOT install XP's service pack three! It's out in beta, I've got it on several sites and it still has significant issues.

Have had several recent issues with latest driver versions being unstable and having to back up a level. (Client machines).

All this is incredibly frustrating and time consuming, which earns me an excellent wage in IT support and makes me extremely reluctant to do anything to a system once it's stabilized - no auto updates, no driver updates, the only thing automated is the a/v signature file update. I have to REALLY NEED some feature before it goes on. Never rely on system restore and uninstall utilities - I make complete images before any major change and do total restores if problems found. Norton Ghost (get the 2003 version) is great for this.

Enjoy the power, hope this might help.

Same problems....So now I'm asking XP to repair itself, If that doesn't work it's off to format world and the better part of a day wasted. I'd go back to 2000 but I'm sure the hell would start again as this box is brand new and I'd probably be on a week long driver hunt for all the new gizmos.

Hey pixelated, it would be a very nice machine if I could just get it running right. I use AVG free edition, used to use Norton but found it a bit of a pig for resources. The machine does go online using firefox to check my website mail and for some updates but when software is running right I tend not to update, don't fix it if it ain't broke reasoning. I'll see how windows repairs itself though I don't put much faith in repair jobs. During the repair process I got a notification box saying the geforce software had not been certified to run on win XP or some such thing so I'll tackle that next I guess. Thanks for the help

win xp is no where near as stable as Win 2000. There I said it!

??

Crazy talk! You may want to invest in some help with your OS. XP is head and shoulders better than 2K and it has been for many years.

What seems to be the prob?

are u running a legit ps or cracked? that might be an issue as well..maybe it dosnt like somthing. I've never had issues like that and i'm running p4 3.2's lol... good luck i know its frustrating

I'm running legit activated OEM that I paid $ 158.00 for. I've had XP repair itself and relaced video drivers with XP certified drivers and have had 4 program errors so far today plus explorer closures while browsing thumbnail images in file folders.

Well I'm this side of a format and reload of all software and be damned if it isn't running slick as owl poo! This is good news for me. When this new box is running right it's a beast. I have never before been able to render 3600 HD frames in 3d studio max while watching a dvd and working in PS without a glitch. I just hope it all stays glued till I get this damned project finished:)

Nope...Spoke too soon, the same problems just came back. I've loaded nothing but the essentails with no anti virus or firewall. Graphics card drivers, sound card drivers, chipset stuff and PS7. I ported the project over to my 2000 box and it purrrs like a kitten, just an older slower one. I guess I'll have to finish the project on that box. XP may indeed be the cat's meow for some but it's been nothing but extreme headaches for me. I've found nothing I need to do in XP that can't be done on 2000 exept for crashing every five minutes so I'm going to find all the 2000 drivers I need for my new box and go back to an OS that has never let me down.

R U Shure your hardware is OK? Did you try another video board to see if the problem goes away?

LOL...I guess I asked for that. I just fail to see where XP is better than 2000 especially if the computer doesn't go online. I guess I really just want the old Atari type of scene where you load up your software and it goes. No I haven't switched out anything yet but I guess that's next. I'm really tempted to go back to 2000 but if this is a hardware issue it will have the same results. The thing I hate most about recent copies of windows is how they work for computer illiterates, always asking what I want then to do or am I aware of a situation etc. I just want the damned thing yo spen its day doing what I tell it to do. While I was reinstalling XP for example, XP found one of my external drives and asked me what I wanted to do with it i.e. open files with this or that and I hadn't had a chance to respond when it started loading windows media player all by itself. When I had my first windows 3.1 box I was constantly getting other peoples boxes back up because they didn't have a clue ( to this day most of them still don't) today, windows tries to look after these people by having the OS query and prod yhe user for input on what they want done....This just gets in my freaking way! I will tell the OS what I want it to do and all will be peachy. This is why I loved 2000, it was stable and took orders from me without asking a whole lot of questions and advice. So I'm going to try and tame this clowny OS once more then I'm going to roll back to where stuff just works.

So...
Fresh install of windows, Fresh install of Photoshop, same issues
Im going to say Hardware, and then point to your power supply.

So here is my latest discovery. Any image file folders can be browsed without problems and PS is stable while working with these images. My client gave me a disk full of images forwarded from four or five sources to be used in the one project. Anytime I go near this set of images things go south. AVG tells me there are no problems with the files. The images are all jpegs from as many as six different computing systems. If some of these had been MAC systems could there maybe be some sort of byte order problem or is it more likely to be malware that AVG can't see?

I nailed it...Billy Gates and his rolling XP show are off the hook for now. All grief was caused by PS7. CS3 trial working flawlessly and all image folders are working again. Anyone else running PS7 on XP Pro or am I the only clown to attempt that? Of course, now I have to shell out mega bucks for CS3. This was a frustrating experience....When I die and life flashes before my eyes I don't want to see this part again oh Lord!!!

I run XP one several machines since years and thou I don´t like Micro$oft I have to say it is the most stable system since NT3 on a Alpha Computer.

But I know how you feel, I had the same problem.

Touch some pics (but not always), watch a UTube film or even scroll fas on a website and boooom. Freeze or sudden death.

After long try and error it was the graphic card.

It didn't mesh with my Aspergers That's for sure! PS 7 runs sweet on my Vista machine along with everything else. So hopefully the projects can move forward to completion with no more grief.....Yeh right!:)
