Win XP is %$*%&@ up!

Not necessarily so - granted it does need tweaking to behave . . . .

If you're really into pain, go find a copy of WINme somewhere.

If it was easy . . . . . maybe I'd get something done.

Hey terry:)
Yes I'm ranting again. I have major projects due soon and stupid me decided to upgrade my system and OS to meet the challenge. Windows XP has done nothing but set my hair on fire ever since I installed it. I was almost going Mac this time but to get the system I have here would have cost 7 grand as opposed to two and change. All would be well if Gates would learn to play nice! Even my Atari ran smoother than this PC in XP. I shouldn't have to tweak the OS, it should just go! If XP stopped asking me questions for five freaking minutes maybe it would have enough power left over to run smoothly. Right about now, I can honestly say I loath computers and resent having to tweak or hunt down freaking problems.....I just need to get these gargantuan projects behind me!

EDIT: Saw your last post, new reply follows...

I personally have no problems with XP. Although my machine came equipped with it already to go. I think the problem is because you upgraded, you have to go through the trouble of setting it up. Give it some time to settle down, though, and I think you will vebe quite happy. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

My last remaining Windows machine is running Windows 2000 quite well. In fact it's what I do all of my video work under, since GNU/Linux still doesn't support running Vegas under Wine.

Yes it probably doesn't help that I'm dangerously close to not having a show ready in 17 days and that this mutated bird flu I contracted last week is causing my brain to rattle around in my skull. I just remember five years of uninterrupted computing in win 2000 and right about now I miss it badly! I just don't have time to be jousting with the machine....After the projects are done, I don't care if it lights itself up and burns...Just please get me to the finish line. Photoshop is having issues but win XP stops responding when I try to uninstall PS. Browsing images in a file folder causes random shut downs which scatter my icons all over hells half acre on the desktop so I can't find anything. Whine, whine, whine. I'm just not in the mood, nor do I have the time to format and rebuild for the fourth time in a month.

Specifically whats wrong? It definably inst XP, as far as system up time is concerned, i leave my machine running for months at a time, and some systems at work have been running for YEARS without a crash or a restart.

It probably isn't XP as you said but when the car breaks down, you tend to blame the whole machine not just the fuel pump:) Photoshop behaves normally until I do something (and it can be anything from applying a filter to hiding a layer) and bam! it's gone, shut down with no warning or reason. The same thing happens when I'm browsing images (jpegs) in file folders, I'll click on a folder within a folder or an image within a folder and Bam! the folder shuts down with no warning. I tried to uninstall PS in control panel, uninstall software and the uninstaller stops responding. I shut down and reboot in safe mode but still I can't uninstall PS. I'll post my specs if you think it will help.

These are the errors as reported by the system going back a couple of weeks, seems the system doesn't record all problems. I'm starting to wonder if I maybe have a bad stick of RAM?

Hardware failure should result in a 09 stop code in a BSOD, unless its not directly controlled by windows, like power supplies etc etc.

Have you done a virus scan... Ever?

Just finnished scanning all four drives about an hour ago with 0 results. Drives are defragged daily and this machine does not go online.

Will win XP tolerate Reg Edit? I'm wondering if the registry may be corrupt. Grasping at straws here. Sorry...I meant Regclean

Clean install. I just hit it with a reg clean program and I was finally able to uninstall photoshop. Hopefully some of my other grief is gone too. Now I will reinstall PS and see how it fares.
