Will we see the D400 by/before summer?

I'll be purchasing an HD DSLR, at the latest, in June of this year. All signs point to the imminent D400 having full HD video and manual control, perhaps exceeding the 7D in quality. I'm really, really hoping Nikon announces the D400 soon for a summer/late spring release as I already have Nikon glass, much prefer the ergonomics and aesthetics of Nikons, and, as I'm already familiar with Nikon DSLR shooting, I think I'd be more comfortable using the D400 than the 7D. Plus, I don't want to buy an expensive Nikon G to EOS lens adapter to use the 7D.

What do you guys think? Will Nikon release the D400 soon? How much lag time is there usually between announcement and release?

The d300s just came out in September 2009. I think there will be a d700s before a d400.

Who know, though. Anybody who gives you any advice is just guessing. I wouldn't count on anything before the end of this year.

If I had to get a camera by June. I would get a 5d mark ii,now that it has native 24p. I want a full frame camera!

If your are going to wait for Nikon. You are going to need patience otherwise you will disappointed.

I'd look for a D700 replacement first. Maybe by summer but it is hard to say. The D300s is a really good DSLR and Nikon is selling lots of them. No reason to replace it yet.

Ya as others mention you probably are in for a bit of a wait here. The dslr shootout in this thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=204706 basically shows what the current Nikon is capable of compare to others and why you should wait longer if you are only interested in a Nikon for video. A great stills camera but just not there yet for anything more serious then some web content video wise imo. They will come around... just not quite yet and like Zim says, that D700 replacement could appear sooner then anything else.

So keep waiting or get on the 1D 5D 7D T2i or GH1 express :)

Why they might not be in a hurry.

Why they might not be in a hurry.

It seems a no brainer that Nikon that hasn't got a video market to destroy and everything to gain to be running quickly at Video on their DSLR's. But a couple of factors make me wonder. Firstly I think if they do want to compete and do video properly they need to produce a great product a D90 with 1080p and just as much Jello wont cut it. Secondly try to look at this from a photgraphers perspective. I assume 90% of people of buy a pro DSLR want exactly that a great DSLR and putting a sub standard or unrelated product onto the product diminishes the marketing of a product. Terrible example I know but imagine your Video fan boy who is buying Cameras like the DVX100b a few years ago. What if Panasonic started putting an MP3 player on it or the ability to link to the web and play games on it ;). It would not improve the idea that the product is a video camera and that Panasonic could be trusted to make a pure product for that market. So I don't think Nikon need to rush but probably will wait till they can do Video properly and maybe will never put emphasis on it at all if they want to market themselves as a pure product for serious and pro consumer photographers. I'm not saying it won't happen but for Nikon to hold the market share in cameras it might not need to focus on it or at least if they do they might not put pro video fuctions on their cameras and marketing it as such. In my opinion these companies would probably be best to somehow separate the products specifically making a distintion between DSLR's and VDSLR's. They could protect there market and capture the newer one as well by properly implementing video into a DSLR type body and so not irking their established customer. Maybe what they are and will do is implement Video mainly on their more consumer stripped down DSLR's to seperate the function form the Pro line. Just some thoughts to look at things in a slightly different way.

Nikon has already said that they will be implementing video, that is better than D3s, into their DSLR line. They just don't respond as quickly as Canon for whatever reason.

that is better than D3s
I love the D3s video and, if the camera weren't so expensive (being a pro-DSLR), I'd buy it just for its video capabilities -- despite it only being 720p. The noise is great looking, which is a huge thing for me.

If Nikon comes up with a DSLR with HD video and full manual control that is priced comparably with the 7D, I will buy it. But, I fear that won't happen before late 2010/early 2011...
