Will this spec edit AVCHD?

If anyone in the know could offer their opinions that would be great!

  • ASUS P7P55D LE Mainboard - Intel Core™ i5 / i7 - LGA 1156 / ATX
  • 8GB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM - ( 4x2GB )
  • 1TB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive with 32MB Buffer
  • 22x Dual Layer DVD Writer Super Format +R/-R/RW/RAM
  • 1GB ATI Radeon 5750 Graphics Accelerator GDDR5- ***DirectX 11***
  • 7.1 High Definition onboard sound card - for 8 Channel Cinema sound

I don't see why not. For future proofing (wow, what an oxymoron in computerland!) I would advise an LGA 1366 since it is trichannel.

Also, you should pick up a dedicated media drive. That will help in the long run.

That said I am editing in a single drive but once the prices drop even more I will be adding a 2 or 3TB internal drive soley for media.

Anymore thoughts?

With all the thoughts and opinions on the net getting avchd footage seems a scary thing to do, but hopefully with this comp I will be able to edit no problem -

high spec comp and cs4 = footage straight off cam into premiere, no probs... right?

I still transcode bu that has nothing to do with computer speed. I don't like editing long GOP interframe codecs unless it's for a quick and easy rush out the door edit.

Just curious, why aren't you going for the LGA1336 sockets? Personally I've got my eyes on the i7 920, the low-end processor that I've heard great things about for editing AVCHD in Premiere with. Granted, it is getting old now.

FWIW, the Core i9's are scheduled to come out in Q1 2010 (possibly as soon as January), which are reported to be 50% faster than the i7's. I'm torn whether to wait for those or not.

That's why I would go with the i7 on a 1366 as you can add an i9 when they become affordable for individual humans (who aren't related to an oil shiek).
