i have an older sony vaio notebook. model pcg srx87p to be precise. it's pentium 3, with 256k and 10 gig storage i think. no firewire but has a pmcia slot. can i still connect a firewire hard drive and stream hvx dv50 material?

You can add a firewire PC card and capture that way. But the real question is can your hard drive handle the data rate of DV50? I doubt it. Maybe DV25 though. What software do you intend to "capture" the DV50 stream with?

I'm capturing DV25 to USB 2 drives (so they don't need external power) both 4200 and 5400 RPM using Vegas 5 and 6

I'm hoping that 7200 RPM drives with decent buffer will support DV50 and maybe some HD rates, though that may be tricky.

so the external firewire drive doesn't do the capturing?

Sorry! I didn't see that you mentioned an external drive. That should work but you'll have to try it to confirm.
