Will the HVX200 give better black?

Just finished reviewing a Christmas parade shot with my Sony PD170 and Panny DVX100AP. As usual, the Sony has deep satisfying black levels which provides more of the contrast and color punch I crave. The 100A blacks are greatly inferior to the Sony IMO (they're more gray than black). The dvx100 looks fine for indoor work but I always reach for my Sony for anything outdoors (I shoot a LOT of nature footage). Has this ever been discussed on the forum and is there any reason to hope that the HVX200 will give better black?

This is an issue of camera settings, not inherent camera qualities.

One could easily make a DVX or the new HVX give crushed blacks. It's also possible you had the DVX working with setup, which would absolutely give lighter blacks.

Arthur, I'm a newbie in this forum but I definitely love playing with black levels. Go to any scene file and set the master pedestal lower (down to -15 max) and you'll see the black levels you like from your PD170.

My Camera Setup was on 7.5. Should it have have been 0%?

Thanks

Yep, big problem. The "digital setup" on the DVX100 serves no real purpose and is a recipe for terrible footage. Once you turn it off, you should be golden and can do minor tweaks to your taste.
