Will the gh2 be able to handle wide, detailed shots as well as the GH13?

Or will the gh13/gh2 combo provide the best bet?

In another thread, Vitaliy said:

"Looking at GH2 footage my preliminary conclusion is this:
Under normal conditions - GH2.
In high detailed scenes and fast movement - GH1 with 40-50Mbit bitrate.
In low light - GH2 always. "

I find this interesting. I've got a gh2 on order and can't wait to use the HDMI out to properly monitor my actors. And the lowlight footage looks gorgeous - I hope my intervalometer will work on the gh2 as well, because night timelapses will be a step up I'm sure.

But what always put the gh13 ahead of ALL the other DSLRs were the wides. IMO, all the Canons and the original GH1 look too soft on wide shots, and when I used them I always changed my shot list to cut them down. And interestingly enough, the HOUSE episode on the 5D had very few wides - they really played to the camera's strengths.

Until the gh2 can produce results like this:

I'll be sticking with the gh13 for wides and the gh2 for the rest.

Of course, a gh23 would be even better ;)

Please... lets just not compare these cameras anymore - it makes people crazy and starts world wars. I agree with Vitali and will get a GH2 and KEEP my GH13s... it all depends on what you are doing. If you can only have one camera then just get the GH2 and deal with perhaps a little bit of mud... if you already have a GH13, personally I would keep it and add a GH2, not replace it.. and if you are so low on money as not to be able to do that... then what are you buying cameras for anyway.. just shoot with your GH13 till the GH2 actually comes out and the play field stabilizes you have the whopping $800 for the body and can use the lenses you already have from your GH1.

In you look around and want to get new camera best option could be GH1 14-140mm kit + GH2 body or 14-42 kit :-)

I haven't seen the body for the gh2 listed alone..

They should. I'm not in a hurry to add to my GH collection, but will buy a GH2 once the dust settles. I'm happy with my lens collection, so will buy a body only (I hope).
I agree, it shouldn't be a war, although tests and comparisons are interesting and make for good discussion, especially on the current state of the Panasonic DSLR offerings.
I'll be keeping my GH13 in any case. I figure it's worth more to me than the money I could get selling it, once it's superseded by the GH2.

The last time I read your post, you were making an important intergalactic announcement that you wouldn't be buying a GH2

second thoughts?

I'm planning on getting a body only (which you can here in Japan so maybe across the ocean too...?) once the blue banding issue has been explored a little more.

Totally agree with not bearing arms in these DSLR 'discussions"; especially when it comes to people who have actually taken the time to provide any information from tests etc... As we all know, it takes not an insignificant amount of time to do any sort of test so I hope people don't get put off by overzealous comments.

It seems crazy to me that we have such heated debates over these cams. Debates are great as long as we can leave the venom out of the equation.

As for wides, for what we pay for these little beauties, I'm sure we'll be pleasantly surprised.

Ahem - it was an intergalactic PLANETARY announcement... planetary INTERGALACTIC.... cause the beasty boys make the bass....... DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOpppppp....

But I digress...

Yes. After seeing and reviewing some newer footage that I could actually download the native files on (and also just doing very well with a bunch a new clients at once) I think it is possible that I may have had a pre production model and that they have done some tweaking. Even if I didn't, I figured that I might as well pick one up for the better low light performance. I dind't get to test that, I was shooting in central park in bright day light and then in a bright lit store room. Also... the price...Hell... $899... that's chump change! I still stand by my view that the GH13 is better for fast detailed motion shots in good light, but having BOTH just opens up options. So why not? I am also planning on buying a AF-100 when it comes out and getting some sort of external box to record to avcintra.

Also...

Is the lens that comes with it the $999 version really THAT bad that it's not worth the extra $100? I was shooting with the kit and with the 20mm pancake when I did my tests, and I only had limited playtime.

"Important Intergalactic Announcement" I almost spilled my coffee and couldn't stop laughing, thanks a lot Framerate.

I agree with you mostly on this, but I really don't think the GH2 supersedes it, rather compliments it. From everything I have seen it appears they both have different strengths and weaknesses. Yeah I might have gone a little too harsh negative on the GH2 in my initial review, but that was more out of being upset, than wanting my GH13 to "win".

I really want someone to post up a GH2 native clip of massive tree leaves blowing in a windy day... it will be the first thing I do when I get one... to see if in fact the model I shot on was preproduction with the encoder not set in stone and they did some tweaks... or it breaks up like I saw it break up when I was recording some wide shots of trees blowing around and leaves in central park. This is where I say the trusty old GH13 will be appreciated for keeping - because as far as I saw there will be some mud / break up on the 24mbit codec of the GH2, even though it won't be nearly as bad as how the mud was on the GH1 in such scenarios, and many people will not notice it. I have nutso super pixel peeping eyes.

I also agree there isn't much point in selling them(GH13s), as they are such great work horses and it's always great to have extra cameras rolling for multiple angles at once shooting possibilities or as backups if something goes wrong on your new camera.

I have an old Isuzu truck from 1995 that I got when I could first drive, of which the selling value is probably under $1000.... but the truck is such a workhorse that I have never sold it... it just keeps going and going and going and out of all my cars - this thing has stayed as a backup workhorse and performed when I needed it and given me the LEAST trouble of any of my cars! It just WORKS. That's how I see my hacked GH13s... I'll probably keep them till they die.. no point in letting go for a few measly hundred bucks.. rather have multiple cams with the ability to handle crazy detailed motion without breakup if I run into trouble with the GH2. When I get the af-100, I am going to be looking for a sdi out solution that works in a Win 7 workflow rather than stay with the 24mbit codec, and that's when I plan to actually go forth and make a feature that I plan write / act / direct and enter into fests. I'm really excited that digital cinema is finally here and affordable. I've been waiting for this for a loooooong time. What has happened to image quality to value ratio for film makers in the last year is just mind boggling, and it's only getting better.

I'll be buying the GH2 since it's so cheap anyway, and then the af-100, and I just ordered a sturdycam (steadicam jr like device but it looks to have a much better gimble joint) You'll be sure to see some crazy comparison footage from me of all the cameras when I have them.
