I'm certain there are people who feel it is a gimmick. But whether people feel it is, and whether it is, are not necessarily the same thing. I offer a few quotes:Simon Wyndham said:The fact remains that to some people it is a gimmick. Neither side is right or wrong.
Obviously -- and I agree with that. I do not agree that it's a "gimmick", but I do agree that each shooter is free to place whatever emphasis on it that they wish.Walter has far and away enough experience to be able to make his own call on the subject even if many might disagree with it.
Apples and oranges, in that the DSR450 is 4:1:1 25-megabit DVCAM only, vs. the SPX800's 4:2:2 50-megabit DVCPRO50. The prices I quote are US MSRP; the DSR450 is $18,000 and the SPX800 is $19,500. Obviously P2 cards would be separate, true. Not sure where you have got those prices from, but here in the UK if you purchased the SPX800 body with 4 4gb cards it could cost you around UKP19k compared with UKP7k for the 450. In addition the 450 would require only a MiniDV tape in order to get going, no need for a Panasonic P2 card drive for longer shoots, and no need for additional NLE upgrades. Apples and oranges.
It is not the same, that's true. But it's extremely close, at least as far as acquisition goes. I think it was Adam Wilt who ranked the formats by quality on a scale of 1-10, and assigned uncompressed SDI as 10.0, DigiBeta as 9.9, and DVCPRO50 as 9.8.Lastly I wouldn't say that DVCpro50 was Digibeta quality. On intiial inspection yes. But the 8-bit vs 10-bit for Digibeta means that the DVCpro codec will not stand up to as much post production messing around as DB. I don't mean to be finnicky, but we should look at all the pros and cons.
Has there been news about there being an HD XDCAM announcement? I know they were teasing something at NAB but no details at all...We'll see what HD XDCAM has in store at IBC.
Harsh? I'm merely pointing out the absurdity of it.
