Will SDXC improve data reliability?

It seems that widespread adoption of SDXC is slated for spring 2010 at the latest. All the computer mfgs. are making sure they have SDXC compatable card readers on their machines, especially the laptops.

It seems that there are more manufacturers announcing the relaease of SDXC cards too (like Toshiba).

My question is; has anyone read the SDXC specifications or learned anything that may suggest that this memory is more robust? I.E. it has an improved memory controller or something?

More speed and size is just dandy. But without increased reliability, it's just an increase in liability. And it costs more.

As much as I have read up on the new SDXC media, there doesn't seem to be any changes being made to improve upon the reliability aspect of SD media. The big changes as you already know are speed and size capability. Unfortunately cameras like the Panasonic AG-HMC150 will be unable to use the SDXC media.

The reason P2 cards and SxS cards cost so much is that they have hardware redundancy and raid controllers built into them to protect against data loss. SDXC is just an improvement on SDHC, but not an overhaul of the specification. It's just like RAIDs with hard drives, you can live dangerously and keep all your data on one drive or spread it across several drives for safety. One method is cheaper, the other is safer.

Losing data on my HMC150 does concern me, I use 8GB cards so I don't have all my eggs in one basket. I'd never use a 32GB card, if the card dies I could lose up to 200 minutes of footage.

Where SDXC cards will come in handy is when we start seeing still cameras that are capable of shooting RAW 30+ megapixel still images at 10+ fps. That's one area where having faster, higher capacity cards will be needed.

Like others have said, I would never shoot with anything larger than my 8GB cards. Its safer practice with SD media to span your clips across multiple cards, as opposed to recording hours of video to a single, large SDXC card.

FWIW,I too agree that increasing relaibility of the media is much, much more important that having longer record times. I use 16GB cards max, that's really plenty for anything I shoot.
