Will Panasonic answer the REDone camera?

Any news or thoughts... will panasonic answer the REDone camera with a similiar offering, something that shoots 4k with more frame rates, etc. etc.? I can't imagine the RED camera will be the only cam on the block of its type for long, seems like 4k imaging sensors, higher variable framerates, and all that good stuff MUST be on the way from bigger manufacturers like pani... no?

I don't think so.

Sony is coming out with the F23 (I believe that is the name) but it's $200k+. Pana looks to be staying with the P2 Eng-style cam design which works.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the Varicam, I don't believe that Panasonic would be associated with digital cinema production on a very high end scale. Sure, things in the middle of the scale shot on SDX900's and the like are all over the place but Panasonic's only real big hitter so far in the high end arena is the Varicam. We will see how the 3000 does.

Maybe it just doesn't get mentioned as much, but I feel like the Sony F900 gets far more use for digital cinema production then the Varicam does.

99% positive they will not. the top end of the HD market panasonic reaches is the hpx3000. a straight up 1920x1080 full raster hd 2/3" sensors.... its delish. its scary sharp and shoots avc intra. thats about as high as pana will go most likely. by the time they build a 4k camera anyway the RED and F23 's will have saturated the market.

Currently, 4K is a pretty tiny market. I'm guessing that's why RED One was designed to support a number of additional formats and at a fairly low price point. A $200K camera might be targeted for a market that is measured in the hundreds or low thousands. Panasonic could produce a 4K camera, but you're right, the only way they could differentiate their product would be with an incredible (but not necessarily unique) feature set out of the box, a handful of unusual or unique features, or an extremely low price point (i.e., below RED's). At this point, I don't see Panasonic pursuing this market.

The battle that the 3000 may have on it's hands may be less against the Red (two different target markets) but more against the Infinity, which I hear has recently started to ship, and like the 3000 has 3 full 1920x1080 2/3" sensors. Most interestingly, a major UK dealer has it listed at £13,570....... !

Wow.
Thats about $28,600 USD
Just checked - the HPX3000 is listed on Panasonic's site at $48,000

This is definitely an exciting time to be working.
It's going to be an interesting few years.

If a UK company is selling it for the £££'s equivalent of $28, 600, it's likely that a US dealer will charge substantially less. The same dealer (am I allowed to provide such commercial links on this site?) has the HPX3000 advertised with a list price of £37,000 (US$77,218 !) but say to phone for actual pricing, so I expect it to be substantially lower.

At the moment, Infinity still doesn't seem to have 1080p modes, just 720p and 1080i. On the other hand, it does have JPEG2000 capability, which I am hearing very good things about, and RevPro and CF as recording media.

Hence, if you need 1080p, it may not be any use to you yet. If you don't, that price, with JPEG2000 recording, may make it irresistable. If (as expected) 1080p capability gets added, wow indeed........
