Will my 14-140mm depreciate or or appreciate?

Hey guys...

Just wondering what your thoughts are on the 14-140mm lens. I haven't used mine in some time and I was considering selling it... but it seems like maybe this is not the best time to do it?

I'm wondering if this lens will hold it's value, or even become more valuable after the AF100 is out. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Used electronics don't typically appreciate. If there were a shortage of 14-140's after the AF100 came out, then it might sell for more than it does today, but considering that the 14-140 is sold by the consumer division to SLR users, it seems unlikely that it's going to be in a shortage situation.

I doubt it could ever appreciate. However, I have a feeling that the 14-140mm is about to become very usable once the GH2 comes out. That is because the ISO performance of the GH2 is said to have improved so much that even the relatively small aperture 14-140mm lens can now be used indoors.

ISO 1600 was usable with the GH1. The GH2 is said to have good ISO 3200 and usable ISO 6400. It is still a little early to tell but if that is true then two stops would help the 14-140mm tremendously. Heck, even 1 stop would help a lot especially in video where the GH1 was limited to a max of ISO 1600.

By appreciate I meant will the resale value e better if I wait for the af100 to ome out? Seems like at the moment there isn't much demand for this lens...

I think this lens is great for what it is for... and now on October come another Firmware for faster focus, maybe speed up a little with the GH1.

And when he AF100 comes out will have a little resale increase. My guess.

My own opinion is that a lot of GH2's are going to be sold with the cheap 14-42mm lens - which, I presume, is bundled with the camera purely to allow some sort of image to be obtained after opening the box ;)

A lot of people who buy a GH2/14-42mm kit will be on the lookout for a 14-140 (if they don't already have it from their previous GH1) so prices look set to stay firm.

Like Eddie Murphy with his pork bellies in Trading Places - hold your nerve

Thanks for your thoughts guys -- I guess I'll hold off for a bit and see what happens... at least until the lens firmware comes out!

+1

GH2 really strengthens the usability of Panny lenses. The instant AF, touch screen AF will make AF on the 14-140 a breeze and 1:1 pixel shooting will extend the range of the 14-140 without slowness of 100-300 lens. Of course we need to see how it all will turn out before guessing the future.

regarding the 14-140 lens... (a little off topic guys, sorry)

does anyone know it its possible to update the 14-140 firmware from a hacked GH1 body?

Looks like they sell new for about $770 at the moment - so probably would be nice to get $600 but who knows how the market for them will fluctuate!

I think it's a great lens but it's hard for me to figure out Panasonic lens prices (Canon and Nikon prices are easier to nail down in general).

instead of panasonic giving a p2 card with new camera purchase maybe they will give a lens deal with af100 purchase?

You should move this over to the buy /sell forum.....Oh and buy the way the lens can be had right now for 500-550used

cheers
Larry

Thanks Larry, but honestly I don't think my subject and initial message was appropriate for the Marketplace. I was asking fellow GH1 owners their thoughts on how the release of the new cameras might impact the lens' resale value.

Given that you can get the GH2 body only for $900 and the one with the 14-140mm is $1500, and that you can get a GH1 with the 14-140 for $999 I'd say it's depreciated significantly. Anyway, that means the lens can basically be had for $600, when I believe it used to retail for $800.
