Will I lose quality in the transfer?

Hi All:

I am getting ready to edit a wedding that I filmed on my dvx100a. My husband said to go ahead and use my other consumer panasonic 3ccd camera (model pv-gs150) to import the clips from dv tape to my computer. My question is this: Will I lose any quality by doing this? Or is better to just go ahead and use the dvx100a which is what I originally taped the wedding on? (the reason he want s me to use my gs150 is that it will be less wear and tear on my nice new dvx100a camera, plus my little gs150 is so much smaller on my desk) But I don't want to lose any bit of quality when I import the clips to from the dv tape to the computer.

Thanks so much,

Kim

I use my pv-gs250 to do this and have noticed no loss in quality. Also, if you get dvfilmaker software you can transform 60i pv-gs150 footage to 24p for editing with dvx100a footage on a 24p timeline.

no you wont lose quality. Some even use a lesser/smaller camera as a deck.

Hey Thanks! I will check out the dvfilmaker. Just wanted to make sure before I import all that film into my computer.

Digital is Digital. When the tape reader reads the bits on the tape, assuming that the head is clean, they will be transfered digtally through the firewire onto your comptuer's hard drive or whatever storage method you have. I have used cheap $200cameras, as well as $4,000 cameras to import footage, and what's the difference?

More expensive cameras have better frame control (i.e. you want to batch capture on frame 00;00;23;02 and on, the camera will seek to it faster and more efficently), however the picture that comes out is the exact same.

I have noticed that the analog outputs on some cheap cameras are VERY cheap, so be careful using cheap DV cameras to proof colors on your TV the D->A converters can be less then satifactory to what you will really be outputting (back to the tape, or onto DVD)

Thanks again! Just getting started using our DVX100a and I didn't think there would be any difference in quality, but wanted to make sure. My little consumer panasonic is firewire and besides it fits so nice on my desk. Right now I don't think I will be doing any batch capturing. You are all so kind to answer my questions and plus give out helpful tips that I had not even thought of. I appreciate it!

Kim
