FS5: Will FS5 Mark II output SDI/HDMI while recording 4k internal and...

I'm a bit in a pinch. Since the original Sony FS5 cannot output a feed over SDI/HDMI while using the camera LCD at the same time I'm wondering if this is still the case with the Mark II?

Can a FS5 II owner here in the group shed some light on this please? Thanks!

If its the same as my FS5 Mk 1 then, when/if you set the record out source to HDMI in the menus you will get a 1080p HD signal fed out (say to my Atomos Ninja Blade) and 4K (well UHD to be exact) recorded internally onto the SDXC cards at the same time. As soon as you hit record on the camera the LDC screen goes black BUT shows all the shooting information, i.e. everything EXCEPT the picture but you can see the record icon, card and battery info, audio meters etc. as normal, but just against a black background instead of overlayed on the shot. By the way, the Atoms picks up the record trigger perfectly - but there is a slight screen lag from the live action.

I assume it would be exactly the same with the Mark 2 as it's just got a black ND filter knob... (yeah, I know, and a few tweaks to picture handling...) but it is essentially the same electronics inside.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Andy that's good info. If it does at least give the vital camera state info on the LCD that is worth something.

Although it still makes some shooting constellations impossible. I.e. I need to give the client a monitor, and I won't be able to operate the camera without a on camera monitor first, then route the signal to a second client monitor... I guess the problem is obvious, additional gear, additional batteries (on cam monitor), additional cost, additional time for rigging etc. And in many scenarios one can't get the budget out of many clients nowadays.

I was hoping that Sony would have fixed this on the Mark II as I think it's probably the biggest NO for me with this camera.

I think....that if you have the raw upgrade and shoot raw or raw to Prores to a suitable Atomos you then get the LCD and the external monitor. I spoke to Dan Chung of Newsshooter a couple of years ago at a trade show and noticed he was doing this and from memory I think that was the configuration that allowed it.

Regards. Patrick.

So the problem is that you can’t record internal 4K and RAW out at the same time. Just internal HD.

If you are recording RAW via Atomos, the HDMI port DOES work on the camera simultaneously, along with the LCD. In HD.

The best solution here is to get a small on camera monitor with SDI or HDMI pass through to a client monitor so that both of you can see what’s going on.

Nope, I made no mention of recording RAW.

The problem, as said, is that you cannot record internal 4K, have the on camera LCD work and send a feed to external monitor at the same time. That is a BIG problem in many scenarios where you either have no budget or time to fidget around with extra monitors, looping through a feed etc.

One of several reasons why the FS7 (or EVA1 for a small/ lightweight rig) is so much more versatile.

Yes and thats why the FS5 is at best while shooting as is and the FS7 when working with everything else. I decide before each job which camera is best suited for the task.

I shoot both Fs5 and 7 weekly. The set up I have found best when shooting 4k on the 5 is only with the atomos. I don't think the internal 4k is worth shooting at all. You don't have to record raw and I usually record prores 422 or HQ on the atomos, the larger monitor is a bonus and I keep all the info on the small screen and the waveform on the inferno. works very well and the footage is awesome. Internal 4K IMHO is for the Fs7 not the 5. The question then is why use the 5 at all, and I have found the Prores HQ in true 4k not uhd is outstanding to grade. And the slo mo out of that set up is awesome from that camera.
