FS7: Will buy a top plate cheaply :)

Hi guys,

As you have maybe noticed, I've invested heavily lately (and still have to save for the B-camera which I need badly - it will be GH5 or a new A7). In the meantime, I've purchased the Shogun Inferno - and since it allows 2160p50 from RAW SDI, also the XDCA and V-lock batteries.... I've tried various DYI methods of fixing the Shogun to my FS7 but it will never be safe and ergonomic without a top plate, I concluded... Don't want to replace the original handle, so something like this from SmallRig would do: http://www.smallrig.com/SMALLRIG-FS7-Top-Plate-1586.html

Considering all my recent expenditures, even the modest $36 price (especially doubled by the shipping costs) is too much for me at the moment - so if any one of you FS7 owners has anything similar collecting dust, please PM me with your price :) Thanks

Piotr

Great - thanks, Liam!

(nevertheless, if someone has a used plate like this and doesn't need it, please PM me).

True - Amazon UK will be the fastest delivery, and no hassle. Could you please advise on a short (0.3-0.5m) SDI cable for 12G Shogun recording? There are millions of models there...

Piotr

PS. Would sth like this suffice?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SmallRig-H...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PBVJDVMSNWC4CYJAAH9H Yeah, I realize there are those super-pro 12G cables, but this is one of those moment in life when I must be a minimalist. So will a GBP 15 cable work ?

Oh - and one more question: will the SmallRig top plate's rear edge clear the XDCA adapter "lip" for sure?

Being on an extremely tight budget at the moment, I'd love to use the same shipment for the top plate and SDi cable. I don't know much about SDI cables; my only experience has been the short one I received with my nanoFlash (it isn't even rated 3G - just HD-SDI). It works fine with my XDCA RAW output and Shogun Inferno, but it's just too short... So please enlighten me whether for 12G, I need some very special cable or a good quality one - even not rated 3G/6G - will work?

I have found an even cheaper one on Amazon, and am tempted to add it to my top plate order: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/ms5/KRAM...TF8&qid=1486702261&sr=1-12&keywords=sdi+cable

What do you think?

Piotr

Sure - but we all know "12G" stands for 12 Gbps throughput, and yet the old, short SDI cable (made for my nanoFlash by Convergent Design several years ago, long before 12G was standardized in 2015) works just fine with 4KDCI@50p on my FS7/XDCA - Shogun Inferno combo... So I guess I'd only need a cable rated 12G for really long runs, or 6G - for medium runs; a 50 cm SDI cable of good quality should work even though it's not rated 6G or 12G...

At least I hope so, and already have ordered one along with the top plate. Fingers crossed :)

Piotr

PS. Here is what Atomos are saying:

Please ensure you test and check your SDI cables for 4K, for longer runs cables of a Belden 1694A specification are recommended.

OK, so I got my Smallrig FS7 top plate - fits like a glove, and enables attaching my Shogun on the magic arm. The pics below show the rig with the monitor positioned so that it can be used both with the camera on tripod and hand-held (the lowest possible CoG w/o obscuring the screen by the stupid, high V-lock battery and/or the cable in its P-tab; BTW couldn't they put the socket at the bottom ?!?). Should I need access to the rear cold shoe (on the original handle) or attach the Shogun sun hood, the arm can be easily extended to enable it. The monitor is on its own Swiss-Arca mount, so it can be removed in seconds...

Piotr

The plate is soo lightweight; also the simple SDI cable - not rated 6G, not to mention 12G - works fine at 4KDC@50p on the Shogun!
