Will an iPhone work with only phone service (no internet)?

My buddy is upgrading to the 4G. Since my phone is about 5years old I was thinking of buying his. In the past I have just taken the sim card out of the old phone and put in a new one. Will this work with the iPhone (we both have AT&T)? I can't afford internet on the phone right now. I just want the same service I have on my old phone.

Yes it works... and if you don't put a data plan on it it'll simply say "data service not available" while away from wi-fi. Kind of annoying.

Thanks Brandon. I would love to have internet on the plan, but it will have to wait.

But the good news is that the guy I may buy it from is a DP, so he has a ton of cool apps on there.

My wife has had my iPhone 1G for the last year and uses it for wi fi, e mail, etc.

Again, internet works fine so long as you have wi fi available. Just no 3G

So, are you saying that it will work in WiFi hotspots, even if I don't have internet on the plan?
