Will a dolly eliminate strobing???

I WAS TOLD STROBING WILL OCCUR WHEN YOU PAN TOO FAST WITH A HVX200 (SET AT 720/ 24pn)..... I NOTICED THIS MYSELF WHEN I SHOT VID USING A JIB..... BUT RECENTLY OUT IN PERU, I SAW THIS VIDEOGRAPHER GETTING THE SAME SHOTS AS ME, BUT WITH NO STROBING...... ONLY DIFFERENCE WAS HE WAS USING A DOLLY........... WILL THE DOLLY BASICALLY ELIMINATE STROBING????

the "strobing" thing is based largely on a combo of the speed of the move and the degree of zoom. a dolly wont hurt. but it in itself wont eliminate the strobing...

and hey. welcome to the forum! but no need to yell. quit with the all-caps thing.

Paul just to clarify, was he following the action by dollying along with it whilst you were panning?

Thanks wgzn and Noel,

@Noel... He wasn't panning while following the action.... Just dollying from side to side..... Why do u ask????

Because following a subject, which looks like it's stationary on the screen, will draw attention away from the strobing.

Any camera movement, particularly side-to-side movement, will produce strobing in 24p if it's too fast. Doesn't matter if it's a pan or a dolly move.

There was a rule for this that i read in Barry's DVX book but I am not finding it at the moment. I "think" it's 7 seconds, .......edit: see below.

its odd. the "strobing" happens all over the place in movies and nobody ever says anything.

Page 22 from the DVX book:
"The general rule of thumb is to make sure that an object takes at least 7 seconds to cross the screen. That's really slow, but it's what you need to do if you want smooth motion."
