F55: Wildlife and Rockets in Florida

It is nice to be back in Florida working for the season, and I'm already having a good time shooting 4K wildlife and rocket launches in my spare time with my F55 and R7 recorder. After spending most of the summer working with other cameras it is great to be back with the F55 again. Sorry about the watermarking, but I have learned something has to be done to protect from unauthorized usage.

I think the quality of your footage in this BHW video is better than some of the other ones you posted.

Did you change anything in your workflow? Different lens(es)?

Looks great!

Doug, beautiful work. My favorite shots were the closeups of the owl, herons and turtle. To get a large variety of birds in one place must have been a wonderful experience.

What lens did you use for the rocket launch?

I used the same lens for both videos. It's a Canon 200-400mm f/4 with a built-in 1.4x extender that makes it a 560mm f/5.6.
That gives me a pretty decent range of coverage without having to change lenses out in the field.
It is the only SLR lens I use for video, simply because there is no PL alternative that would be within my price range.

Hmm, good questions. I hadn't really noticed that the the BHW video looked any better that previouos stuff I've posted but there could be a few reasons for it if that's what you think.

1) This was shot with my F55 rather than one of the other, less expsenive, cameras I've been posting footage from lately.
2) I am starting to override some of Resolve's default settings for Sony RAW and it has made grading even easier -- and I think a little better.
3) I have decided that a little noise reduction for Sony RAW in Resolve can often be a good thing, even with footage that was perfectly exposed. A little NR just smooths stuff out a little, especially on blue skies.
4) I feel like my eye for grading is getting better and I'm not cranking the highlights up so high and the shadows down so low as much as I used to. Not every shot needs to spread the entire dynamic range from high to low -- even though it is very tempting (and easy) to do so in post.
