Ok what I've been doing for shooting widescreen is I shoot letterbox to help my framing, I know I could use rubber bands and all that but thats not what I am asking, after I captured the first day I got my cam I took a frame out and took it in to photoshop an made a psd of just the bars on top and bottom, what size would be for like theatrical type widescreen? What size is what I am asking, I want to keep it 720 in width so what height would I use.

Just divide 720 with whatever ratio you want.

16:9 = 1.78
Academy = 1.85
Cinemascope = 2.35 (or 2.40)

So for academy you want a frame 389 pixels high. Remember this is with a PAR of .909 for NTSC DV.

found this while doing some other research just now

To find each aspect ratio in pixels.

720 divided by aspect ratio, multiplied by 1.

So 720/1.85 = 390 X's1 = 390

720 X 390

for 16X9
720 divided by 16 times 9
or
720 divided by 16, then times 9
