Widescreen Differences...

He should not have to do that for footage which was shot squeeze -- it should already be 1.21 -- which is why I'd like a screen shot of what he's seeing. It should only be .9 if he shot something OTHER than squeeze. If he didn't actually shoot squeeze, or shot letterbox instead of squeeze, it should be readily apparent in the screen shot.

Doesn't squeeze still use .9 pixel aspect (squeezing the 1.21 width onto a .9 pixel) and it then gets stretched back (from .9 to 1.21) in post?

It sounded like he merely had a settings problem in his vegas to me - he just needed his project settings to be right...but maybe I read wrong or misunderstood.

No. Squeeze should be automatically detected by Vegas as 1.21. There's metadata in the stream (the "widescreen flag") which should tell Vegas what's what.

Now, if you shoot with an anamorphic adapter, Vegas will not know it's supposed to be widescreen, because the DVX itself will not know it's supposed to be widescreen and will not flag it as such. As far as the camera is concerned, it's shooting 4:3.

Same with letterbox. It's 4:3 with black bars imbedded in the image, not actual widescreen.

In my experience, the PAR is not always honored by the NLE. For instance, if you have a bit of 4:3 recorded at the head of the tape, then you record some widescreen, when you capture, if you capture even a single frame of 4:3 at the head, that may be what the NLE triggers on. So, it always helps to know what your footage is and be able to set the PAR manually if necessary.

In general, I don't disagree, and if this is jmcox's issue, it's what he needs to do -- but I've never seen Vegas mess it up whatever's on the tape, so before I send him to start messing with settings (very easy to mess things up worse if you don't yet understand what they do), I'd like to take a look at the problem itself.

Ya I dont think its the tape cause I switched tapes when I shot in the different modes...I cant get a screen shot anytime soon...But sometime soon...I'm gonna mess around and film some test stuff just to be sure I didnt screw anything up with the camera, or what not -
- thanks for the tips though

"In my experience, the PAR is not always honored by the NLE. "

This was my experience too, last time I shot squeeze mode. I had to actually manually set the project settings in Vegas. Maybe the flag wasn't in there because I had shot previously in 4:3?...don't know, but it's nice to know that a flag should be in there...good info to have.

"(very easy to mess things up worse if you don't yet understand what they do"

Yep, totally agree with you there! :)
