Widescreen bars are gray. There supposed to be black.

I filmed my film in widescreen, so I uploaded it into premier as standard expecting it to maintain the black bars on top and bottom.....it didn't, they're gray. What is that? Just a color you can pick? Does anyone have instructions as to how I may change the color?

Check the letterbox bars with the waveform scope (using color bars as a reference for black).

If they are grey it maybe a fault (camera) because there is no way to adjust them.

It might be that your screen brightness is set too high so black shows up as gray. Try checking that. If you're editing in a widescreen project then you shouldn't see the blackbar at all unless you're exporting and viewing on a 4:3 monitor.

EDIT: Actually, there is one thing you can try. Open a 4:3 project and create two black bars using the titler and then just superimpose them on top of your gray bar.

The background of the monitor window is the same gray background as all other windows.
Preimiere displays video in it's native aspect ratio, without any "leterboxing" etc.

Chances are that you have a 4:3 sized monitor window, and premiere is just displaying the 16:9 video in it, this leaves the (gray) background visible top & bottom.
