I can't find anywhere where this is discussed so here goes....

Whats the basic difference between using an anamorphic lens and using 'squeeze' mode? I also note that the chap from 'Pine Lake films' (sorry dude can't remember your name!) does the conversion in post... so again what the issues with doing it this way compared to the 2 previously mentioned ways?

Obviously the lens is substantially more expensive so are you getting a better end product by using it over 'squeeze' or doing it in post which are both 'free'

Both in camera "squeeze" and the anamorphic adapter use the same PAR (pixel aspect ratio). The differences are in the method used to achieve the widescreen output.

The anamorphic adapter is effectively a wide angle lens in only the horizontal axis. In camera squeeze uses the middle portion of the image from the CCDs and digitally processes it to fill the frame vertically.

The anamorphic adapter has noticeably higher resolution but it is more difficult to use and makes achieving shallower depth of field shots more difficult. Things like filters and a mattebox are also more of a challenge with the adapter, but there are great solutions available at a number of different price points. The adapter is also great in tight shooting situations as it gives you the equivalent of about a 1/3 wider lens.

If you use either, you will need to ‘conform’ your footage in your NLE to a PAR of 1.2 to keep things looking correct.

I am shooting a music video and I am thinking that I might crop the top and bottom to give it a anamorphic look in post (in other words shoot 4:3)... however I was wondering that if what I were looking for a wider view... would the anamorphic adapter give me two things.. a wider view (then what it would look in squeezed - nevermind the resolution) or it just gives you more resolution and a bit more coverage just because the nature of its ratio.....

I think I kind of answered my own question. Seems like what I am looking for is just a wide angle lens... just wonder how distorted a .7x or a .6x would look.
