Wide lenses/adapters?

Has anyone got anything that improves on the 'wide' end of the stock lens? It just isnt wide enough for hand held in my opinion (esp without any optical stabilisation). Just wondered if anyone was using any adaptors of any kind - even screw in front wide adaptor ones?

Thx Dan. $$$$$$$:( $2k - very poor value; a non starter really for a basic light depleting 'cowboy' quick fix screw on. They'd be talking at the $400 level... Does it even mention 'HD' glass?

Your post however may lead to other solutions -I'll b back :)

Good luck. When I was shooting with the HPX300, I wondered the same thing, I was really missing the wide end that I have on the HPX170. Problem is to buy a nice Fujinon or Canon real WA lens, you blow the whole value equation of the 300 out of the water as a good W/A "real" lens is going to cost twice what the camera cost.

It would be nice if Fuji and Canon got together and added a reasonable cost 1/3" CAC WA lens for a reasonable cost of perhaps $3k to $5k?

Lenses will come Dan - you DO know that this camera redefines the whole world dont you ;) Sell Sony; buy Panny ;) Jeez I had a good day with it today but really missed a wangle :) My very savvy client was beyond impressed with it.

Flaca - thanks for the tip mate. This works well for you yes? No issues with CAC or the fact that it is not stated to be 'HD' glass?

Fujinon 1/3" Lens Options

Here's a link to Fujinon that has all the 1/3" lens specifications and wide angle attachment options.

As i recall, the only time we ever special ordered the Fujinon WCV-85D wide angle attachment, it was over 2k.

The Fujinon 13x wide angle 1/3" lens runs $6500 new.

Thx Terry - looks like it is SD glass on that lens and no CAC?? (How soon we take CAC for granted!)

I think it may be worth biding my time for manufacturers to 'catch up' and maybe getting the .8x adapter from B&H for now. I'm perfectly OK to pay that $6k for a wangle with CAC - its still cheap compared to a lovely SD Canon J9 (5.2max @ 2/3").

In fact do you know how that 3.5 wide Fujinon 13x 1/3" compares like for like on the wide end with a J9? Be really interesting to know but I dont have the maths!!!

Nice try Ric! Too many maths still though and I think that calculator refers everything to 24×36 mm (35 mm) film gates. I dont think my mindset reference of 2/3"lenses have chips that big?

On the link, set the Focal Length (mm): box to the wide end of the lens (3.5mm) , select the chip size in the drop down menu (1/3") and hit calculate. The wide end of the 13x is 25.2mm in 35mm. The Canon J9 (5.2max) on a 2/3" camera = 20.8 in 35mm

Mate, there is NO WAY that the std lens is equivalent to a 25mm wide lens in 35mm terminology. It is 45mm at very best. If it was 25mm I would class it as quite a wide angle lens and it is SO not. D

You were referring to the 13x3.5 back a few posts. The standard 17x lens is 4.5 on the wide end = 32.4
 
Sorry for any confusion Ric - that was another wider lens option being discussed. The std lens is 4.5 max wide as you state. I'm shocked to see it is almost as wide as a 28mm SLR 35mm lens. I have one of those 28mm's and feel the 28mm to be far wider than the HPX's stock Fujinon. I think I'll have to get both out for a side by side!

lens converters

back to the lens converters.... I've been wondering if people have tried the Century Optics Pro series HD converters made for the HVX200 on the 300. Both are 82mm. I am debating getting the 300 and since I have the 2x converter for my HVX200, would like to confirm it works on the 300 and if there are any issues?

I've been happy with the quality of the image when used on the 200.

I found a used Converter from Century and bought it. Called WA-8X-IF. Here a Link to B&H:

Its a really great thing, works fine! And looks very good mounted on the 301.
Im not sure about CAC, i disabled it. And the weight is now balanced about 60:40 to the front.... Not so good, but now the cam is absolutly perfect for my kind of work. The MOD is now about 0.5 m, so i have no more problems with Interviews in crowdy scenes etc...

Canon Wide angle lens & DOF-adapters

I'm planning to buy a 301E. Today I have a Canon XHA1 with a SGPro3 35mm-adapter. I also have a Canon HD Wide Angle (0.8) converter (72 mm).

1. Is it possible to use the SGPro3 with the 301? I assume I need a 82-72 step ring.

2. Is it possible to use the Wide angle converter/adapter? (Still need 82-72 step ring).
