Hi all,

i wanted to know some rules regarding using Ultra Wide Angle lens. The case in point it samyang 14mm f2.8 lens (it could be any other ultra wide angle lens also).

a). Will the distortion on the sides of uwa lens more when the subject is closer to the lens?

b). If i take a shot from far distance, will it also have distortion on the sides? e.g i take a shot of a structure from some distance, will it show the distortion on the side? what i mean is, if i take the shot from some distance, the structure will definitely not show distortion, but anything else like buildings on the side will have distortion?

regards,

Payal

The tokina will attach to a 5dMKiii.

Not all UWA lenses show distortion. The 17TSE is pretty much free of distortion. I think the 14mm L is supposed to not be too bad.

The UWA lenses that don't show a lot of distortion, like the Canon 14mm L will look fine if they are locked down and shooting level. Once the camera tilts or pans you'll start to really notice the distortion. It can be a good effect to disorient the viewer, or you can leave it locked down and enjoy the wide field of view and stretched depth perspective. You really should play around with one and get a feel for the characteristics of each lens.

The samyang 14 is a fun lens on a FF. Sold mine awhile back and I miss it so I'm buying another. Stop it down a bit and its about as good as you can get in this range. The copy I had was better than a friends tokina 11-16 and a 16-35 L. It does do some funny stuff with tilts and pans, but it provides an awesome perspective in certain situations. I'm not counting the 17tse because a $2000 optic should outperform a $300 lens.
