wide angle lens for hvx

I previously owned the CAVISION (CAV) 0.6x Wide Angle (WA) screw-on for my DVX and for the price I thought it was a better deal than the Century Optics (CO). I was not able to tell any quality difference in the picture except the the CO had more chromatic aberration..

I've also used the CAV WA with their HVX Bayonet mount and I don't think the design is any better than the screw-on.

For the HVX I own the Century Optics 0.6x (WA), but after using my friends CO 0.55x (Fish) I prefer the .55x.. They call it a fish and it does have a slight fish effect when you're zoomed all the way out, but you can zoom in a bit to eliminate that.

Century wide angle

Century wide angle

I have a 0,6 Century (102 mm) for my HVX. A few points:
Yes it is very good in pic quality, but where are drawbacks also:

1. You have to remember that in manual focus You can't count on metric(inch) values and shoot with them by measuring a real distance to object, this works only with HVX own lens. Autofocus is ok and wideangle is very tolerant ofcource with this matter.
2. When chancing to wide ancle is always a sort of risk: You might disturb the srews, get depris to lences, You have to take UV-filter off before putting Centyry on etc.
3. There is no shade (sorry my english) provided, so wide angle is a pit sensitive to direct sunshine. (I don't own mattebox etc. should really have it).
4. You also lose half of the zoom range.

Conclusion: If I had 170 & wider angle standard, may be I wouldn't need wideangle add ons. On the other hand 0,6 is wider than any standard zoom. It actually makes lines arch. Horizon for ex. isn't strait anymore with 0,6 Century

I have the Cavision wide angle and have used it for over a year. The only complaint I have is excessive lens flare when shooting into the sun, which is common with wide angle lenses. It does the job nicely and for less money than the Century. That said, the Century models are probably worth the extra if you can afford it.
