Wide Angle lens for HPX500 (and my next 2/3" ENG)

Hi,

I am looking for a wide angle lens for our HPX 500s. We have the kit lens for our 500s, but i want to get a better lens for hand held ENG work and b-roll. I would like to stay Fujinon since our zoom and focus controls for the other lenses will work. I spoke with the fujinon rep and he offered to demo me these two lenses. Will I notice a difference between these two on the HPX 500? What about future cameras we may move to such as the new varicam or cameras in the next few years?

HA14x4.5BERM $30K

ZA12X4.5BERM $20K

Yes,

You will notice the difference. HA series is highest quality lens, i have 7,8x22 HA HD , fantastic and i wish i had 4'5 version of it... If you can, go for it.

According to Fujinon, there is no diffrences between HA and ZA series. The latter has a lower price because the multiplying factor is shorter and not because the glass elements are of inferior quality.

Is that enough of a jump from 17x7.6 to be worth the upgrade? What are the other pluses to the Angeniuex lens? I like the idea of being able to keep using my fujinon zoom and focus controls for studio shoots.

I very roughly calculate the FOV on the 17x7.6 to be around 17-18mm on APS-C and that puts the 14x4.5 FOV around 11mm on APS-C (which is very nice and wide like my tokina 11-16). By the same calculation 10x5.5 should have a FOV similar to 13mm on APS-C (which is a place on my Tokina I rarely use).

Yes, 5.5 is wide enough, though i'd update to 4.5 just for steadicam use (i use it mostly for steadicam work).

Can you please specify where they say this? i heard mixed information regarding that.

There is a document published by Ianiro (Fujinon's italian official distributor), where is explained how Fujinon has been able to introduce a new series of HD lenses (ZA) with the same optical-mechanical quality of their top of the line series, but at lower price. Howewer, price differences between the two series is not that much, at least in Italy: (street price, plus VAT) HA13X4.5B ERM Euro 18.000 - ZA12X4.5B ERM Euro 15.000 - HA22X7.6B ERM Euro 19.000 - ZA22X7.6B ERM Euro 15.000 http://www.ianiro.com/NEWSLETTERS/FUJINON/Ottica_HD_ZA_pag_1-2-3.pdf
italian only.

interesting, though yes, the price difference is really not that big. Well, anyway, don't try the SD lens, i have tried canon 4.5 SD broadcast series lens on hpx500, it's really bad :(

Thanks a lot guys!

I an interested in how much iris ramping these lenses have and if they have enough reach for the OOF BG interview type shots I like to do as well. I typically back up and zoom in quite a bit for interviews (that is whay I am leaning twords the 14x).

most likely you wouldn't want to zoom towards the very end, it get's darker, but for an interview, all should be fine

No one has mentioned it here, but you may also consider the Fujinon HA 16x6.3 BERM.

I've owned one for 2 years on my HPX500, and it is fabulous! It still goes very wide (not quite as wide as the 4.5, obviously), but with the 16x it is also good at long distance interview set-ups, and with the 2x extender it does very well for exterior B-Roll telephoto work. I specifically purchased this lens because I could not afford both a high end 4.5 lens and a high-end telephoto lens. The HA 16x6.3 has really been the best of both worlds for everything that we have been shooting. No regrets, and can't say enough good things about it!
