Wide angle focal length recomendation

I was wondering what some of you adapter owners would recommend as a good wide angle focal length. I have a 28mm but I want to go wider without a lot of barrel distortion. What is a good wide focal length without extreme vignetting or barrel distortion.

I have a LEX with FD mount

Thanks

I'm in the same boat, so I'll just give this thread a little boost. Jason, would you mind posting some stills of what the 28mm looks like? Also, which 28mm is it? f/2.8 AI-s? f/1.4?

I don't know if Canon make one like Nikon, but there's an ultra wide angle lens which the rear elements are 'curved' to transform the 'fisheye' into a very balanced/undistorted image. I imagine this type of lens would hardly produce any distortion, also masking the lens offset as it should be quite balanced across the whole image. Trying to think of the lens model, and wish I had one to try - not much use, but maybe someone who knows what i'm talking about can assist my 'point' :)

18mm to 28mm flavours are getting better across the board with the use of aspheric elements to reduce BD. The only problem with some of these newer generation lenses is the very short focus throw making manual focus very difficult.

I have a nikon 24mm f2 that looks surprisingly good to me.
If you don't mind the expense the Nikon 17-55 f 2.8 is supposed to be a great lens. I am lusting for it if the EX-1 adapter issues can be solved.

Lenny, I'm starting to wonder about the EX1 lens issues as we got word from a user today raving about our flip on the EX1. He's using very high end Nikon zooms. More later on this.

The EX-1 adapter issues will be resolved very shortly with the LetusEx. :D

I agree with Lenny. The Nikon 17-35 2.8, 17-55 2.8 are good choices! But expensive suckers.

Kholi,
Do you know something the rest of us don't? As I understand it, Hienle is working hard on fixing the EX / LE problems and hopes to resolve it very soon. That is very different from "the EX-1 adapter issues will be resolved very shortly with the LetusEx."

As an owner of both I am overjoyed that he takes the problem seriously, and I have nothing but respect for the folks at Letus who are doing an incredible job, but the hair on the back of my neck goes up when when claims are made on this forum that really aren't proven.

After all kinds of iron clad statements were made about these kinds of issues on both the Ex and the HVX a month or 2 ago now we have threads about focus problems on both cameras. People are making buying decisions based on what they read here. I did with the EX based on the idea that it worked great with the Letus. Yet based on my tests I just turned down a bunch of rentals. So lets be a little more careful with sweeping statements please - both Pro and Con the various adapters.

I hope to have some tests soon (with grabs for a change) but I'm not reporting anything till I've really double checked my results.

Jason.adams,

i have tested sigma wide lenses. 10-20mm, 15-30mm, and 20-40mm.

the 10-20 is not good. 15-30 is usable with slight falloff on corners, this depend on your taste, the 20-40mm is a constant f2.8 and is the bright wide lens i use the one i keep on my lens kit for shoots.

In my mind that's because it read like a personal attack, and I'm sure to the vast majority of us an unjustified one.
This forum is better off if we just stick to the technical and aesthetic issues.

I completely agree!

The adapters talked about on this forum, really are only known to users of this forum. This forum seems to be the adapters target market.

So when people post 'information' on this forum, we (us users) read it and respect it. Which can and does lead to false expectations and sometimes wasting money on products that are incorectly talked about. And sometimes the feeling that a user(s) is getting incentives to promote a company hence failing to point out certain flaws (big or small).

Don't misunderstand. I'm very positive about the Letus EX except some details -like the EOS adapterring- but the're are people who earn their money with promoting a company. And I heard about this London DP that he gets money for his testingwork. He can't be 100% objective, impossible! That's what I said.
BTW, we all know if Letus wants to use our material on their site we get money for it.

Arno,

You're spreading a rumour that you have absolutely no real knowledge of - its character assassination and it has no place here. It will lead to the best people leaving this forum. Please cease.

We've been reading Philips reports for a long time, before he used the Sony or the Letus, and he is widely respected here, and generous with his experience. Stick to the facts please.

Arno,

I was the poster in the thread you started that requested the moderators to remove it. Your sentences are negative sounding, even the title of your thread is an implied accusation that is outright malicious in tone.
In fairness to the original poster of this thread Do not hijack this with your issues.

Start you own thread so when the mods delete it precious information based on technical facts and aesthetics that matters to a lot of readers in this thread wont disappear as well.

We are all just guests here, be polite to our hosts and other guests in a house not your own.

Be considerate

Sorry, Ted, Lenny,
... I didn't want to hurt this great site (but i understand I did).
Maybe it also has to do with the language problem...
But...

Sorry Barry (he started everything and the 'coming out' of the Lex)!
Excuse Phil (I know much more now).
Excuse Hien.
The issue is solved in a private mail with Hien.

It's been stated all over that the Le brothers are working on a fix for the EX + EX-1 combination. If I get a chance I'll go back and find it. But just like that, its also been said by Hien himself that they're working on an adjustment system for the X/Y offset that's completely unique. The info's right here on the forum. Along with the relay.

I dunno who told you the EX-1 worked great with any adapter, that's not my issue. But you can see it in the footage that the EX-1 and just about every adapter has an issue that needs to be addressed.

Kholi,
I understand that they are working on it. But that's quite a bit different from "Ex -1 problems will be resolved". We don't know it will be resolved. We hope so, but who knows. It comes across as a claim for the product.

Many claims were made about the Letus at first that have now settled into reality. I'm not pointing to you at all, and its not to denigrate the Letus which is great.

"every adapter has an issue that needs to be addressed." - Yes!

Wow how excited I was too see 17 plus responses to my post...But to my dismay very few of them were even remotely on the same subject.

Thanks To TeddyBear, Denis and the FEW others for the on topic response that is helpful.

Perhaps this is also the appropriate thread to discuss favorite colors, or coke vs pepsi...

Well, I'm still looking for suggestions from experienced users too if there are more out there.
I've got the F-mount on my LEX but I've been looking at the Canon 20mm 2.8 and it looks like an option for you. While it's not the same as actually testing out the lens on your adapter, these Flickr shots might give you an idea of its characteristics.
