Hi all,

i want to get a wide angle lens but am really confused which one to get. So if you were in my place which one would you go for & why: Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 or Canon 17-40 f/4?

i would be using it on my full frame canon dslr and i have canon 24-105mm f/4 and canon 50mm f/1.8.

Which one would you pick of these two lens to complement with my other lens.

kindly let me,

regards,

Then 17-40 if you don't want to spend the money on the IS. I can't imagine what use you would find for 14mm for a corporate video. It is a specialty lens in my opinion.

Based on your questions, I would suggest renting these lenses for a gig and buying the one that you find most useful. I have a fairly good idea of how I like to shoot, but it's just preference. For example, I mostly shoot above 30mm as most of my work is corporate interviews and b-roll and I do not like what wider lenses do to people or spaces.

actually on the wide angle i want distortion. i just want to ask will i get a noticeable distortion on 17mm compared to 24mm? will i be able to get that curved/stretched distortion?

If you want something for the perspective shift, then go for the 14mm. It's as wide as you ben get on Canon before needing to go to fisheye. The Samyang has come rather strange distortion, though, which doesn't make it very good for architecture or straight lines.

17mm is wide enough to throw of the viewers sense of space. It is much more noticeable than 24mm.

i surfed some video sample of samyang 14...14mm seems to be insanely wide

Yes, 14mm is insanely wide. As somebody said before, it's a specialty lens.

24mm is the widest I would use regularly.

If you need wider, the Samyang 14mm is sharp and nice but it does have some ugly mustache distortion. Check this before you buy it.
The 16-35mm f/4L IS is expensive but it is a really nice lens. It's not at all about the extra 1mm, it's about how much sharper it is. Here.

I have the 14mm Samyang, as Samuel H points out, it isn't good for architecture due to the distortion and mustache is harder to correct then just barrel/pincushion. I use it for nature shots, not people. If I was in a corporate climate, which I've been, I probably stick more to something that is around 18-24mm anything wider just gets "too funky".
