It was a lot of fun to shoot this with these guys. Matt and Tom have a lot of passion for what they do and hopefully that came across in the video. Wicked Innovation is also a great place to get work done if you own a Subaru in the New England area.

Shot in a day at their shop with my af100 with nikon, voightlander and olympus lenses.
Constructive criticism is always welcome.

Nice piece Erick.... Has a good flow and I completely enjoyed it... maybe it's also cause I'm from NH originally. Where is their shop?

Only constructive criticism that I'd say is that some of the shots hold for a really long time and the slow motion does seem a bit too slow, and I'm amazed for even saying this.... but just a few minor things... Overall it's a nice spot and I"m sure they'd be happy to get the exposure. The audio also came out really well too. What did you use for that? Did you also add any lighting?

cheers....

Really, really like it- very nicely done!

Amazed how well the blown out shot of the car coming in through the door held up...

I might agree a couple shots had me waiting for a cut to a close up, but you were obviously intending to linger on the shots- the whole film has a very deliberate, methodical feel to it, letting shots breathe...

Loved the grinding/welding shots (and the "slam my drawers" sign!!!), some more "Action/working/wrenching" shots might have been nice?

Looks great, good story, good characters!

What settings do you use, and how did you grade?

Thanks guys!

I've got another project that I'm going to be finishing soon so I'll try to work some more closeups into it :)

The audio was recorded on a Zoom H4n with an Audio-Technica AT875 then edited and sweetened in pro-tools. We also wrote all original music for this as well.

I shot mainly with the Abel "range" setting only really changing the master pedestal when I needed too. I think a few shots including the car entering the garage I used DRS +1.

For color grading I used MB looks and a custom look I setup for this project. I find that using "auto shoulder" really helps smooth out the transition when you clip footage instead of it just banding directly to white (or off white).

I probably shot about 80% of this with the voightlander 25mm. I can't say enough about how much I like the look of that glass.

There shop is located in West Kingston, RI. http://www.wickedinnovation.net

I liked it...
the only thing i didn't is that a couple of clips were too long (and i noticed other guys noticed that). BTW ia s great piece, image quality is better then "PIMP MY RIDE SHOW ON MTV" ;)
What setup did u use for lighting?

I kept the lighting pretty simple. I used natural light as much as I could for the b-roll. For the interviews I used natural light plus a Lowel Rifa 66 and a Lowel Pro-Light. Just a simple two point lighting setup.

Nice job on the music!

Just curious, why record audio externally?

I've never really been able to get awesome audio out of a camera, so it was really cool to work with an audio person who knows their stuff. Maybe it's something I've been doing wrong, I don't know. If I'm alone I'll typically get sound with a Sony ecm-55b lav. It sounds good...but I've never been really excited about how it came out I guess.

Even though the Zoom isn't a top notch recorder is still does 24/96 audio which gives you more headroom to work with. The audio guy I work with picked it and I trust him. I'll definitely pass the compliments along about the music to him.

On a side note it was really nice not to have to worry about sound while I was shooting :)

Nice piece. I kept waiting to hear................. NAT SOUND!!! OMG! That shoot had so much nat sound going on and I didn't hear any of it. So many transitional shots are missing. Get in tight, bring in nat sound full then weave music back. You have everything else covered very well.
