Why Vegas?

Can somebody just quickly tell me why they choose Vegas and what makes it so popular? Thanks.

Ease of use. Intuitive user interface. No hassle handling of mixed formats (except the HVX HD Pro format now - used to ingest everything). Seems less bloated than PP. Good text generator. Lots of well thought out features - it's the FCP for PC, basically. Does everything I need in a solid package without the hassle of PP.

Great question. Six months ago I was asking the same thing. I owned the product but was using Premiere and Canopus. After forcing myself to use Vegas end to end for a project, I haven't gone back to Premiere.

It was a tough adjustment to be honest, but now I can't see me using anything else on the PC. It's not perfect, but it's awfully good. A lot better than me!

While doing some research, I accidentally came across this video from some guy (i think his name is Jimmerson or something like that) about how Vegas handles 24p and that got my attention. After doing a lot of research in the Vegas boards I downloaded a trial version and got hooked. Still have my training wheels on but I'm convinced I made the right decision and so far its a thrill to see what I can do with this.
And to think, I paid $99 for Vegas 6 and am getting an upgrade to Vegas 7 + DVD architect for $150 from Videoguys----cant beat that with a stick!

Daniel!
A good text generator?
Easy to use, but I would say that is the weak point of Vegas, a poor text generator.
Like almost everything else about this NLE.
It is actually fun to cut on this!

I like it 'cause of the unlimited Video & Audio tracks you can have, unlike Avid's Editor, unless they've changed it recently, but, that's also for REAL-TIME editing too ... I guess that's why ... anywho ... another good point of Vegas, it doesn't need any very special hardware to work with... when you capture to hard drive, it just needs a totally separate Drive, (separate from your 'C' drive the OS is on) so you get the full capture speed... but no fancy super drive, just a separate one... it does help to have an ULTRA 100/133 7200 RPM drive though.

Editing is fun on this!

I agree w/ the txt editor and tracking isn't nearly as smooth as AE, but very powerful app!

Why use Vegas? Just have a look on the main editing window. I find it very clearly arranged. For me this speaks for itself.

Because what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas... no seriously... I also had a Premiere/Canopus system (like another poster on this thread) and I can't say that about Premiere... So far I've never crashed Vegas... while Premiere was crash-happy. I was extremely hesitant to make the switch because I was so comfortable in Premiere (crashes notwithstanding)... and I also gotta' say there's no going back.

If somebody has zero experience with an NLE then it would be crazy to go with anything but Vegas... it's got a way shorter learning curve then Premiere had... If Vegas isn't killing Adobe's NLE software sales then I'd wager that it's mostly a case of Premiere users not knowing what they're missing.

(But if you're a mac guy... I'd fully embrace FCP... some friends of mine are on mac/FCP and it's a thing of beauty...)

I just downloaded the Demo, the learning curve is slowly creaping around since it is hard to go from PP2 to Vegas.

But I am impressed, small install and you dont have to have a killer machine to run it.

That's a lifesaver for me. I have a 4-year-old machine that wasn't top of the line when I got it, but have no problems running Vegas. I've been using it since it was Sonic Foundry's Video Factory 1.0, so I've kind of grown along with it. It just feels right to me.

There's a special rebate over at Newegg, buy the Vegas get $75 rebate plus
Cinescore through mail-in rebate.

It also applies to Sony store directly. I'm hoping it works with the upgrade as well, it doesn't say it doesn't but I'm going to send it in and see what happens. Not a bad deal at all.

Def doesn't need a totaly separate drive, I have captured to my laptop (albeit a 7200rpm one) HD and it works perfectly, no dropped frames.

But yeah, Vegas is so intuitive. Do anything at any time in the edit and it works.

Just wanted to thank DVXuser "GCO" who mentioned earlier in the thread that Videoguys had the upgrade for $150. I regretfully had not ordered it earlier and everyone else is now charging $200. So I ordered it yesterday from Videoguys. Thanks for the good info!

I was just quoting from the sony (old sonic foundry) site regarding this, but maybe they've changed the requirements recently, 'cause v2, v3 & v4 mentioned it, and I thought v6.x and v7.x still needed it too... good to hear a separate drive isn't needed now ... :beer:silly me, never looked at the new requirements for v7c ... this makes Vegas even better to me now... even though I have a separate 320GB 7200RPM drive, anyway. :) ... anywho, it still supports unlimited video and audio tracks, limited just by your computers memory... better than most other editors, and I've not had any problems with the TEXT editor ... maybe it's not the best, I can't say, no other NLE used by me, but I'm happy with it... !

BTW- any word on when DVD Architect will support HD-DVD or Blu-RAY burning? ... all the updates to the Vegas program regarding HD, but nothing to Architect, even in v4a ... really strange.

!

I think it was/is a little early for Sony to be including either when DVDA4 was released, but I would think they would support Blu-RAY over HD-DVD.

Ha ha ... yeah ... since they make Blu-RAY, but if they're smart, they'll include both... many other burning software packages, not even editing programs, are including both formats, so, they should too... !!

what if a customer doesn't have Blu-RAY, do we tell them to go buy one 'cause our editing software just supports that one, and not HD-DVD?
:Drogar-Dum(DBG):

If Sony's smart, they'll include both in the new versions... at least, I hope they're smart !

as of now, it doesn't even allow inputting HD files, without saying it's going to shrink them down to SD ... really sucks when working with HD in Vegas, and can't put it to HD disks.
