Why Vegas Pro 8.1?

From the release notes:
Added support for running under 64-bit editions of Windows Vista™
Support for addressing greater than 4 GB RAM for improved memory management..
Improved support for multicore processors: Vegas 8.1 can now use more than 4 video rendering threads.
You can open Vegas 8.1 projects in Vegas 8.0c and vice-versa.

Also reads AVCHD which is very nice. Maybe 8.0c does also, but my 8.0b does not. Also 8.1 is noticeably faster.

8.0b didn't support many types of AVC-HD, but it did have some. 8.0c did support the PH mode for a while, but for some reason it's not showing the video anymore on my system? I'll try 8.1.

I have a dual core machine. Do I benefit from 8.1? Also do a lot of my plugins become useless because they are not 64 bit? Sorry, I'm not a computer guy. I just feel i have to apologize for that shortcoming. Came out of an environment where we called IT if there was a tech problem.
No that I'm on my own I have to learn it all.

Doh - 8.1 is only for 64-bit users... didn't realize that on the first read-thru. The 8.1 update will not run on a 32-bit system.

Yes, your 32bit plugin effects and transitions will no longer work. Most scripts will continue to work, though. I know Excalibur 6 is working in Vegas Pro 8.1.

I installed Vegas 8.1

It installed as a entire new program that runs as 64bit.

But it also keeps the regular vegas installed, so I installed 8.0c Patch for it.

So now I have both 32bit Vegas and 64bit vegas. And the 64bit project is compatible with the 32bit project and vice versa.

So you if some plugins doesnt work in Vegas64bit, just save and reopen the project in the 32bit edition.

I had to do that since Vegas64 had a bug regarding 5.1 PCM Masters.

Wow, Vegas 64 is out??? When did this happen?

I've been reading about it for months.

Any benchmarks yet? Looking forward to testing it out and I'm ordering a Quad Core AMD very soon.

It came somewere in september if I remember correctly.

From a user perspective (subjectve), I didnt find it faster, but that could depend on what type of things im doing with the editor.

Im sure there are applications that screams for 64bits.

At least I can use my 8GB of RAM.

What about raylight? I sent them an email asking if it would support 64bit laptop back in July and they said no, I would be better off with a 32bit laptop. I sent them an updated email on Wednesday asking the same question and no reponse as of yet.

I have the vegas pro 8.0a (drop down from 8.0b) but would like to not have to edited on the laptop and would like to get a HP desktop with 8GB Ram and 750 Hard Drive and 28" monitor. Now just wondering about raylight working with the new vegas pro 8.1 64bit computer.

Vegas plug-ins do not work in 8.1-64 bit. No Raylight, no Magic B, no nothing.. this was as of the day it was released. it also renders slower. I'm still glad it's out so the 3rd party people can start on the 64bit drivers. If any one knows of any 3rd party that now works let us know.

I think thats the reason we still have access to our 32bit version of vegas. Because its gonna take some time before this thing is polished.

it also renders slower.

Perhaps this was your experience, but it was certainly not mine. Mine rendered about 1/3 faster with the new 64 bit version. I run both the 32bit and 64bit on the same computer. And I tested exactly the same clips back to back with each version.

I think depending on what you do, performance can be varying between 32 and 64.

Just of curiosity, what was it you rendered? (codec, resolution, filters etc)

I don't remember exactly, but the source was some 2k RED files I had laying around. I likely rendered to 720p or 1080p .mp4 files.
