Why use the frame rate hack?

Why do people use the 2fps frame rate hack? Why not use the interval recording mode?

I am about to start doing timelapse work, and I would like to know the advantage and disadvantage of the frame rate hack.

Thanks.

All kidding aside ...

While I haven't had a memory card until recently, so I have not implemented it, my understanding of it is that while it would offer you the choice of 2 frames or interval for timelapse, the real beauty of the framerate hack is that you can get any even frame rate between 2 and 60, so you could do 8 or 16 or 20 or whatever, right?

Yeah, Timur set up our cams with each scene file a different rate: 2, 24, 36, 48, 60 at one time. So you can just switch between and have them there ready to go.

2fps and interval recording are two different things.
The main reason people use the 2fps is the extended shutter time. It gives you a lot more light to work with in low light situations, and motion blur(depending on shutter settings) which you may or may not want.
When doing things like clouds and sunsets you may want to stick to interval doing one frame every 2 or 4 seconds for more natural looking motion.

at first i was excited about this framerate hack because i thought i would be able to get more than 50fps on the pal version... damn :(

Yes, but you PAL guys get a higher horizontal resolution in DVCProHD, and there's no hack for NTSC cameras to get that, either. :)

2fps + 350d syncho =
