why the video quality of D7000 & D5100 are so different

People say they hv the same sensor, but seems their video quality hv a big difference.
I hv seen so many clips on youtube / vimeo of both d7000 and d5100 (>50 clips),
and I find that the d7000 hv a much much better video quality (it related to the lens used but should not hv so much difference)

the d7000 image is sharper, more cinematic, and hv a nice gamma.
And the d300s gets the same good video quality as d7000.
And I think the video quality of d7000 is very close to canon 7d. (but they hv a totally different color & feeling)

I like so much the color of D7000,
so I plan to buy a D5100 orginally,
but I find that the video quality really hv difference between them...
so I don't know wht to do now :cry:

Simple, just go buy a D7000. It is your desicion. You don't need anybody to tell you what to do. Of course the D7000 is a better camera all around. You get what you pay for.

D5100 records at 17.5mbits
D7000 records at 25mbits
D5100 is just not going to be as good

Are you sure about that? I could swear I have shot video with my D5100 up to 20...

Huh, just checked the specs and it is only 18. Weird though I still swear some video was above that...

Where have you see that the D7000 records at 25mbits?

I actually didn't say that the D7K records at 25mbits. I just saw that the D5100 records at 18mbits. I googled the D7K and I didn't see that it records at 25 either...?

The whatdigitalcamera review says D7000 24mbits (varaible) (sorry I was off by a megabit) on the filpside Dpreview say that the video takes 5.5MB/s which is 44Mbits. The codec is variable and must have an upper limit in the 44mbits and target of 24mbits, depending on the scenes.

Interestingly Preview give the same number for both 720p & 1080p. I think I will have to devises some tests to check out this.

I just checked and the D5100 records around 20-22Mbs as well. There are almost manual controls on the D5100 as well. It's pretty easy to tap in the settings you want and shoot... Honestly, I think they are both capable of the same images. It's probably the same scenario as the 7d and the 60d. Both capable of producing the same quality images... it's just that more film people bought the 7d and therefore there are more good videos from the 7d.

If you have the camera, try 720p v 1080p. If you find, as I suspect you will, that the mbits are not the same you will know how much value to give to that review. In any event, it is no where near 44 mbits. This is why I don't like unmoderated forums--no fact checking by the moderators.

The thing is that I saw an article as well that says that the D5100 only records at a variable 18 mbits, but I just checked at it is certainly higher. So it looks like the D7K records at the same as the D5100.

I thought I saw the same, but I cant find any review to back that up.

I've just done a simple check filming my cat. I need a to work out a repeatable scene (or set of different scenes) which would strain a codec and I need a better way of measuring the change that reading the statistics in VLC. any way the codec isnt the same for 720p as for 1080 at least in target.

1080 24p 20mbs average
720 25p 12mbs average
720 24p 10mbs average

D7000 vrs D5100 Video

D7000 vrs D5100 Video

They have the same Sensor and Processor
The difference is that the D5100 has been enabled to record 1080 at 30fps
That and the articulating LCD make the D5100 the clear winner for my Videos.

The D7000 with two cards, twice the battery life, locking MultiSelector, more ergonomic controls and better build is the clear winner for my Action stills (Event Photography).

I really doubt that Nikon will come out with firmware to enhance the Video and other features on either.
So we must wait for the D400 to release more potential of this 16mp Sensor and Expeed II Processor and add a larger buffer.

D7000 gives me 21mbs in 1080 24P mode. 720P mode is less. D7000 is very nice. Exposure is somewhat problematic as it has a tendency to over expose, but I have learned to compensate. I also use an AF100; the two match pretty nicely with a little color correction.

honestly i dont think so,
check youtube of the model u talk above , they all give different video quality if u look very carefully.

7d is the best in my option, and d7000 is just very close.

I can't tell you how wrong you are. You cannot judge a youtube videos and properly assess whether a camera is good or not. Ask anyone here...

It's hard to guess a VBR codec's nominal bitrate from checking footage.

I've seen my GH2 vary from 15-20 (on the same settings) depending on scene complexity.

Every camera has it's advantages, if you own or have access to a large amount of nice glass for one brand that makes shooting on that brand all the more appealing. Beyond that ease of use and cost of transitioning to another platform also comes into play for most... if you own brand x and your thinking of switching to brand y, you'll also have to logically asses what value you will gain out of that transition. IMHO, I've seen amazing images out of almost every HDslr... It's the carpenter and not the tools. If you take the time to light properly and plan out your shots to maximize the strengths of each camera then you will create beautiful images. I've owned a t2i, a GH1(3) and a D90 and I can honestly say that there are things I liked about the Nikon which are specific to their look but were flawed on that model by the codec and rolling shutter which the D7000 has fixed (For the most part) and puts it within the same quality of both other cameras. If I were to shoot on any of the three I feel I could get acceptable images out of any one of them. Would the Nikon be MY first choice? No, I (I as in ONE MAN, NOT SPOKEN WORD...) would rather shoot the GH1(3), I feel like it's a more complete video camera, but if I was to be taking stills as well as video? The t2i... Even though magic lantern has made that camera a pretty nice package for video as well... The acid trip still kills me as I love deep DOF wide shots... And then the Nikon in that order, not because it's not a nice camera, just because there is extra ease of use for ME with the other two cameras... I know that there are other people who choose to shoot on the Nikon and do it extremely well. I feel like people are too quick to rush to hostility when talking about cameras... And yes there are tests which you can compare and get the specs from to inform your decision and amazingly beautiful footage from almost every camera out there... But buying a camera should be about what YOU think looks best. Just like buying a new lens, go to the store or rent the camera bodies your considering buying for a day from lensrentals or anywhere else and SEE what YOU think. If we're talking strengths and weaknesses of the cameras then lets keep it to more specific aspects and help inform potential users/owners of each camera of the limitations and strengths of each rather then claiming one is better than the other.

I'll chime in here.. I shoot with all sorts of DSLR's, mostly dealing with my own d7000 and 7D's/5D's. the d7k and 7D are more or less the same in quality, but the d7k has noticeably better DR while the 7D offers 720 60P. I wanted more range, and I had a bunch of nikkors, so the D7K was the right choice for me.
