GH2 Why the shutter?

This isn't really the best place to ask, however I'm more involved in this site than the two photography forums I'm registered at.

What is the function of the shutter on mirror-less cameras? When you aren't shooting a photo (still) the shutter is open. When you do shoot a still the shutter closes and then opens again. So honestly (and I'm not being sarcastic, I really want to know) what is the purpose of the shutter curtain?

If I let my thoughts wander a bit, I suppose it is there for the reason that the image sensor cannot (or the hardware for that matter) mimic electronically say 2000th of a second shutter speed, and in the case of the GH2, the sensor cannot mimic a shutter speed higher than 1/60, hence the need for the mechanical shutter curtain.

Am I wrong?

Most likely due to the rolling shutter skew and half-frame exposures with flashes/strobes in still photo mode using a CMOS sensor.

There were a few Nikon DSLRs that had CCD sensors and no physical shutter. They could sync to flashes at shutter speeds higher than 1/250th, but I'm pretty sure this was due to the global shutter capability of the CCD sensor.
