Why the hold-up in the USA for the GH1?

I can think of a million reasons, but my favorite is borrowed from the early scene in the movie "Brazil", when the senior government minister attributes the rise in terrorist activity to "Bad sportsmanship!"

This is my all-purpose reason for anything which defies rational explanation. :-)

But to get back to your question: According to Barry Green & others it now takes less than a week or two to get a GH1 after placing an order in the USA. GH1's might not be sitting on the shelf in most stores, but at least you may not have to wait a month or more to get one as was the case not long ago.

It's a brilliant new marketing strategy by Panasonic. Keep them off the shelves until after the competition comes out with something better.

I called Panasonic Direct yesterday and was told two weeks... end of September, or first week of October, actually - so I would say it's somewhere between two to three weeks to get one right now... at least directly from Panasonic.

I just ordered mine through Amazon and got it in a week. I had been waiting for months hoping to buy it from BH Photo Video but they still list it as back-ordered.

Way O.T.: While you're waiting for your GH1 (or 7D) to arrive: If you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend "Brazil". But watch the Criterion Collection "Final Cut" edition, not the original Hollywood studio "happy ending" version. About 100% of everything predicted in Brazil (way back in 1985!) has come true, but -- unfortunately for us -- our present reality isn't as funny as the movie.

if you catch it right crutchfield had them... some one called and told me that crutchfield was expecting some in on sept 14 i placed my order on the 11th and got my camera today the 15th...

maybe i just got really lucky...

so annoying...by the time they hit more shelves it will be time to wait a bit for gen 2 of the GH1......riight?

I think because of the recession Panasonic chose not to make very many units.

That's why there is a shortage.

In Europe though, there are GH1s sitting on the shelves in most shops, waiting to be sold. The demand is obviously a lot higher in the US.

Amazon has couple of them in stock (7:30 AM CST).

Thanks ajamils... I ordered the last Amazon GH1. I still have an order with J&R. We'll see if that ever happens. Not holding my breath thou. It's interesting that Amazon is now showing GH1's from Adorama. But if you go to the Adorama web-site they are showing the GH1 out-of-stock. Confusing.

Pretty simple. Recession led to expectations of lower demand for what was, in the mind of their marketing division, a somewhat over-priced camera for the consumer line that would probably not be very competitive with entry level DSLRs from Canon or Nikon. However, they didn't realize they were making one of the most attractive and cheap prosumer video cameras ever, and it had huge demand from video prosumers...and thus, shortages. Somehow I'm getting the feeling that the theoretical 10:1 photographer to video demand for things like the 5D is reversed for this camera...but I have no data to support this.

Thanks to all who posted. I just ordered my GH1 camera today with overnight shipping from Panasonic direct. We'll see how long it takes to get here.

If anybody finds another spot that is in stock can you shout out please? My Brother is trying to get one so I told him the best bet is checking these forums.
