F65: Why the F65 is better than the F35

I really don't like people using films as examples of what cameras can do. I know it seems silly to say, but we all know how much goes into processing footage before it reaches the big screen.

Only last week I was at a premiere of a film I shot, and the colourist had not done a great job, and the producers had done a home made DCP. At some point the levels had gone totally askew and the whole film was super contrasty. If you based your opinion of the F65 off that, you'd say it was just a sharp DSLR.

Ha!
Keep clutching onto your "Real Steel" as proof of how amazing the F35 is.
And I love the argument, how great the motion of the F35 is, cause it's a global shutter and CCD!
And hey, "give these poor 35 million dollar films a break!" - "I'm sure it was just a bad DCP" - are you kidding me - these are films with budgets of 30 million dollars or more.

The colorist on Friends with Benefits did 21 Jump St and Sin City and Superbad and pretty much a ton of huge Hollywood films - John Persichetti - and you think he was just having a bad day with that trailer?

Yea, sure that had to be a green screen comp - how do you know - well cause they were shooting near the edge of a cliff - so it would have been impossible to get a reverse? No way of course to ask the actors to stand back 20 feet and cheat it? No, they can't cheat things in moovies!!! Who would do that? That was be deceptive.

Get off the kool aid all.

Yes that was a bad rip of Jumpin the Broom - here's a better one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWnIhMU_pRY

OPPS - moire in it, blown out highlights. And such lacking in subtly, the skintones. So flat. And a moire-shot in a trailer for a 7 million dollar film? Wow, that's so like film to moire like that and to have such an ugly highlight blow out and skintones that are dead. And god, did you see that wedding scene in the trailer - that blue - oh god that looks horrible.

Man, maybe the colorist on this one was having a bad month too?

It was only a 7 million dollar film! That is so unfair. That's no money to have a good DP or colorist! Maybe the director told them, "you gotta make sure you moire that building"

Oh wait, the DP shot Man on the Moon, Mona Lisa Smile, and Cadilac Records. Maybe he just was having a bad few months on this one.

And the colorist did Argo, Pacific Rim, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Prisoners. So he's pro - but again he probably had a bad month on this one. Maybe he had a cold or something?

Here's a frame from the F65 I quite like, shot in typically overcast English weather. A basic LUT applied, nothing more.

I shot with the F35 for the first time the other day. Used it as a b-cam to check that it was battle-ready for a-cam duties on film I'm flying off to shoot tomorrow. Have to say, I think it comes up very nicely. There's certain a texture to the image no matter how you expose it, but it's a very natural, pleasant looking kinda noise.

If my F55 could look like either of them, I'd be a pretty happy dude

Sure the F35 and F65 may look better. But in versatility neither have a dime on the F55. It can go places I would not want to be with a F65 or F35. They are just very different purpose built cameras. The F55 is probably the most flexible camera available. In my opinion it's the perfect camera for those who want to cover the whole spectrum of video production with only one camera. It's small enough to go run and gun anywhere a FS7 would if you rig it properly, and yet, "big" enough to feel at home and be competent on a large film set. It's a great camera with great features. In flexibility and features I think it's currently unmatched. In most circles that is way more useful than image alone. I think you are already a pretty happy dude.

Great looking frames indeed. I'm not only talking about the F35 image quality. Composition and lighting are also top-notch.

@Aaveum - I'm a happy dude, but man I want F35 look.

@Grug - nice frame grabs, PM me if you send me dpx to play with? no posting. just play.

vry cool! how WB?

Well I put my F55 for sale to see 'what happens'.

I might look at F65, possibly RED, Amira, not sure but affording too many cameras not on my schedule at the moment. Plus exchange rate a true killer right now.

Appreciate the kind words fellas!

Well I went through the manual and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to access the 'maintenance' menus needed to change into custom mode, so it was CineEI mode or bust. I just balanced for daylight in-camera and used daylight fixtures (HMI and Remote Phosphor) to light it.

Thanks! very beautiful stills! and light.

All I'm saying is that when you're trolling a camera forum and go cherrypicking for bad frames, don't get greedy. Find a real representative frame from the camera, not a bad trailer comp.

You've now in the unfortunate position of having dug your heels in and are telling a room full of F35 owners that their camera handles highlights and motion poorly. This is obviously a silly revisionist stance.

Instead of getting more worked up on this Friday, how about taking your dusty and neglected F35 outside and pointing it at some trees. Play with the exposure. See how nice that looks? Nothing at all like the frame you posted.
