Why such a BAD review on Amazon? (OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2)

I have read a lot of dvxusers here that raved about their OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2. However a quick search on Amazon.com revealed a completely different story.

Can we get some of the owners of this RAID system to testify please ? Any other good source for RAID enclosure, I cant afford Caldigit, Gtech , Sonnet and all the other high end stuf.

Stephen,
How long have u had yours for and what HDD do u use with it ? Does it come with software tht allows you to manage the system from OS X ?

I had mine for about a year before upgrading a while back to the CalDigit HDPro. If I remember correctly, it does come with software, but I always used Mac OS X Disk Utility to manage the drive.

Mine had two Seagate 1TB drives loaded in it and I never had an issue with it.

I own, and use 2 of them day in and day out. rock solid, for the price paid, they are such a steal. each one has 4 Samsung F3 1 tb drives in them at a raid 5, giving me 3 tb of space per array, and read and write speeds match consistently at 200 mb/sec, flights above and below that bouncing back and forth on the sustained. Both hooked up in esata.

These are 3 reviews, from 3 vastly different places and people. Defective units are bound to happen. If you saw something like... 25 reviews that were bad, than something is up IMHO. Mine are still trucking along no issues. Throwing everything I've got at them.

I don't have that model, but I do have the 2 drive model with the quad interface:

I have used this for 2 years I believe now. I did not buy their drives, but some local 1TB Seagates. I use this with SuperDuper to automatically mirror internal drives on my mac-pro and it has worked flawlessly.

If I were buying again, I would certainly buy the same product! Of course, I am not sure with the specific model you posted, but at least wanted to give some feedback with another enclosure from the same people.

I have a dozen or so of their elite pro 2tb and 4tb drives and the fans have gone bad on two. one drive has completely failed and the content of it is sensitive (studio stuff) so I can't get it fixed. :(

order placed, will update you guys.

I predict you'll be fine :)

I have two and I have been WORKING them 24/7 since Feb or so of this year with no issues. They are supplements to my existing 16TB RAID but still working hard.

My favorite part: You just plug in a normal computer cable to power them.

I have about 20 other drives - and have several for which I have no idea where the corresponding power adapter is. With the OWC's you don't have that problem.

transferring 3 TB (via esata ~8 hrs) of data from the older Promise Smartstor DS4600 RAID 5 to the QX2. Definitely a big difference between the two machines. If anyone needed a comparison review of these two, let me know.

Please, I'd like a comparison. I'm debating between the Smartstor (including the NAS version) and the Qx2. Thanks.

OWC Mercury Elite AL Drives = BAD!!!

OWC Mercury Elite AL Drives = BAD!!!

O.K. I work with imacs and Powermacs primarily editing with Final Cut. The External Raid drives WILL NOT STOP CRASHING!!! Amazon gave this a bad review with good reason. I can't tell you how many projects are now lost forever because of these HORRIBLE drives. Do not buy!!!

i've had the Qx2 for about 2 years. had one drive go bad which OWC replaced. apparently if the firmware is different on the drives it can cause problems. otherwise pretty solid system. next time i would buy caldigit though.
