Why slow playback in vegas pro 11 w/ GPU acceleration on?

Hey guys I have Vegas Pro 11 build 595 running on i7 processor with 8 gigs of ram and a Nvidia GTX 550 graphics card. GPU accelerated rendering is turned on in the prefs. I have set the available MB for dynamic RAM preview to 2000. I am getting slower and choppier playback with GPU acceleration turned on then when I do when it's turned off. I can't figure out why. Any suggestions?

My setup is very similar to yours. Quad Core I7 w/12 gigs ram and the GTX 580. I noticed better performance when I kept me dynamic ram preview to 512. I play back 1080/23.976 .mov files from my 5D, 1080/24 .mxf files from my HVX200 and others pretty flawlessly now. Sometimes very large Uncompressed QT and AVI files (10 - 20 gigs) dont play back smoothly, but are far better than they were in Vegas 10, that's for sure. My only complaint about Sony Vegas 11, is that it has big problems with Cineform files, but hopefully they will fix that soon.

Dynamic RAM Preview has nothing to do with normal playback. DRP is like a render, only it's held entirely in RAM. The higher you set it, the more space you'll have, so the more you can prerender. But setting it higher doesn't improve your normal playback at all, and can possibly hinder it.

I'm using vegas pro 11, im not able to use ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GPU accelerated(its always off) any idea if this card will work, if yes, any tips on what i need to do ,thanks

I had some problems getting vegas to recognize my card at first. Ends up that I had to get the most up to date drivers installed for my card. You may need to do the same

thanks M1, still after the newest driver updates, no luck, vegas is not seeing it as compatible for some reason

thank you for the info, im hearing that real time preview is improved with a good gpu that is compatible, Im on 64bit vegas i7 and 6 gb ram, is going to a HD6880 a big plus with regards to constant preview with multi tracks and plugins involved, rendering is good for me already, its just GH2 hacked files are very slow with preview at with plugins involved, thanks for any info
