Why shoot in 50i/60i?

This dude I know always shoots in 50i with his DVX. I asked him why and he says why do you shoot in 25p?

I thought the only point in shooting in 50i/60i was for making slow motion footage only. After all its crappy de-interlaced footage.

People choose it if they like it or if it's right for their projects.

It isn't deinterlaced. It's interlaced.

LOL sorry I meant interlaced. I have been learning to de-interlace all night :)

When you say if its right for their projects, how different is 50i compared to progressive if 50i isnt used for slow mo? I just don't get why people want interlaced video?

50i/60i is for the "reality" look. It's completely appropriate and in fact usually preferable for shooting news, sports, live events, or anything where the "reality" look is important. Plus, it's twice as sensitive (meaning you need only half as much light to get equivalent brightness) as the progressive modes are. Plus, it exhibits about half as much noise as the progressive mode does. Plus, autofocus works much better in the DVX's interlaced mode than it doesn in progressive. There are many reasons why shooting in interlaced might be the right choice for certain scenarios.

But if you're after "the film look", interlaced is usually the wrong choice.

Ahhhh ok great, thanks for the helpful insight.

But each time you shoot in 50i you must interlace it right?

And off topic Barry, regarding your famous DVX Book which I shamefully havn't a copy of yet, +do you work for Panasonic in any way as someone told me you can actually buy brand new DVX's that come with your book?

No, but Panasonic used to buy copies of the book from me and include it in the DVX box. They haven't done that for a while though.

Fools that they are. You'd think they could quantify the increased customer satisfaction / reduced support calls . . . oh wait, they don't do support anymore . . . hmmmm....

I shoot skiing, and depending on the shot I might use 60i. If I'm shooting close, either following the skier or on the knuckle/deck of the jump, I'll use 60i because its much better for slowing down, even though I have to deinterlace it. Those shots I'm more likely to slow, as opposed to wider shots/cutaways.

Well, hold on a moment, they're definitely not "fools" -- they're still packaging the HVX/HPX book with the HVX200A and HPX170, and they're including The HMC Book with their HMC150 and HMC40 camcorders. From all the feedback that I get, customers sure do love it! :cheesy:

They just don't include the original DVX Book with the DVX100 series anymore. They used to put it in the box, then they went to a program where they were making it available by a mail-in rebate, and then after that expired, they just didn't renew it.
