GH5 Why Shadow/Highlight VS Contrast adjustment is better - less noise?

I have read online that when setting up your CineD profile and reducing contrast that you should use the settings Shadow/Highlight +5/-5 instead of using Contrast -5 as it will reduce noise when grading?

A reddit post stated that it was to help adjust the contrast finely, mainly affecting the shadows and highlights instead of across the board. They did not recommend using it as it increases noise.

Anyone have any thoughts on their experience regarding this and would you still recommend lowering contrast/shadows/highlights on the CineD profile?

I suggest that if you use CineD you leave everything else default except sharpness and noise reduction.
The more you tinker with the numbers the worse it gets.

I'd say that pretty much applies to all the color profiles.... I leave it exactly as is, no "S" curve of any kind. It's so easy to add noise in the shadows otherwise....

Has Panasonic improved inbuilt noise reduction on the GH5?

I read online when it was first release that it was poorly executed.

So far with the CineD, as suggested by what I have read online for best dynamic range, saturation -5, sharpness -5 and contrast -5, the rest zero. Is this an old setting that is not relevant today with the current firmware updates and people's experiences?

Are you basing your adjustments on whether someone is shooting 10bit or 8bit?

I am currently using FHD, 50p, 8bit, 150megabit due to saving storage space. Occasionally 8bit, 4K, 50p, 150megabit.

For the highest dynamic range use HLG.

For CineD making changes to the curve does not influence the dynamic range, it just changes the curve.

Hi Cary, so do you know why would people recommend adjusting shadows/highlights than contrast for the CineD picture profile to reduce noise?

Is it better to adjust contrast or shadow/highlights with CineD?

As I said before apart from sharpness and noise reduction I recommend to leave everything else alone.

Why do some recommend it? Some think they can convert lead into gold by trickery! :)
