Why no variable frames rates in DVCPRO 50 ?

yeah it's strange... I guess it should be quite easy to implement, and also for DVCPRO and DV. I've never actually thought of it... But they're probably saving up some features for a HVX200A version. (they can't make it perfect right away I guess).

Why? It's enough to have this feature with the highest picture quality. You can downconvert VFR 720p to SD in post production ...

Also this is a progressive feature, so with interlaced mode it's not possible.

DVCPRO 50 IS the highest picture quality. It has the lowest compression and can be progressive.

hmm, difficult to compare. On the other hand you have less resolution with SD and 720p is closer to the native chip resolution. If you downconvert 720p to SD you wouldn't see a noticeable difference to DV50. Also 720p is a "real" progressive format. You can shoot DV50 and DV progressive but it will be stored interlaced (Sony calls it psf). Maybe with VFR this could be more difficult than.

On page 36 in the user manual you can find how the progressive mode works with 576i and 1080i.

Keep on reading! You need it.

For starters, DVCPro50 is more compressed than DVCProHD is. For another thing, the reason that you can't do slowmotion in DVCPro50 is because it is not a progressive format. DVCProHD can store progressive frames as they come but DVCPro50 is an interlaced format, and as such has to undergo a telecine process when recording in 24P or 24PA.

On another note, doing 24P in progressive segmented frames (PSF) isn't the same thing as 24P inside a 60i wrapper. Two completely different formats man.

Uhhh.... DVCpro50 is WAAAAAY less compressed than DVCproHD. I personally think DVCpro50 SD looks better, in some cases, MUCH better than DVCproHD downconverted to SD.
