Why no Ebay?

Ok, I'm not going to just send money to some stranger that's registered on this message board. Can you John do anything if one of us gets ripped off other than kick them off the message board. Ebay provides some security for making a transaction. I just don't trust ANYONE who tries to sell something here instead of Ebay. Why? Here's why:

a) Because on Ebay if you do something wrong or don't conduct a honorable transaction, the other person can leave negative feedback and even take it up with Ebay.

b) On Ebay you're usually expected to provide pictures and an accurate description. Those pictures and description are legally binding.

c) There's no way anyone that's not a con artist is going to make more money here than Ebay, so why wouldn't they take it to Ebay in the first place. Do they want less money? "Gee, I think I'll go to DVX user and sell my camera for $2000, even though I could get $3000 on Ebay".

d) I think this message board and DVInfo is thriving with scammers because it's commerce anarchy. How often do we see: "Brand new workstation... just purchased... hasn't been opened... only selling because I need a triple bypass"... then why not sell on Ebay... are they afraid that they might have to provide a photo or a legally binding description or that the person they scam will have some legal recourse.

By not allowing Ebay actions you have made this section obsolete to all of those who do not want to get ripped off.

It also pisses me off because as we speak I'm selling a crapload of my stuff on Ebay and I can't post a link because of the new rules >:(

Re: Why no Ebay?

I totally agree with the restrictions on eBay ads. If you want to stick with eBay, then stick with eBay. When boards allow eBay ads, they quickly fill up with eBay spam. Also, nothing pisses me off more than seeing an interesting ad and finding it's an eBay auction. If I want to bid on auctions, I'll troll on eBay. How about showing me a single instance of fraud that occurred on the DVXUser marketplace. Not to say it can't happen, but eBay is not exactly fraud-free and full of well-documented DVX100 frauds.

Re: Why no Ebay?

I don't like to sell stuff on ebay mainly because of their charges. If possible I like to sell outside and rely on each others trust. I know, I know don't be naive..but since I'm a honest guy, I appreciate honesty, vice versa, regardless whether I'm selling or buying. I believe that there are still people who have business etics. and besides...I like to see world without paranoia.  ;D ;D

Re: Why no Ebay?

Those fee's are pocket change compared to the extra money you make from selling there. Before I buy anything I check out the person's feedback.

People keep talking about "how to spot a scam" and one of the things they keep saying is "if it's too good to be true, it probably is". Well, maybe they should add "if they want to sell you something outside of Ebay for considerably less than it goes for on Ebay.

I think I was almost scammed by someone from DVInfo. I was going to buy a Marantz CDR-300 for $300 bucks off of them. The pictures "wouldn't come through" and when I mentioned that I would only pay through PayPal, I never heard back from them. PayPal is another way to help keep yourself from getting scammed. So, if you're going to send money to a total stranger, at least insist on using PayPal.

I tell you what, if I was a con artist looking for some easy money, I'd just hop over to Ebay and save some pictures of a DVX from an auction and post the item for sale on this message board. When they asked for pictures, I'd send them the one's I'd saved. Easy money and good luck tracking the guy down and getting your money back.

Re: Why no Ebay?

Oh, and another thing that I've noticed about these message board merchants is that they're always willing to sell for "a reasonable offer".

Re: Why no Ebay?

I am in a process of a deal right this moment from a person that used this board to advertise. I surely do not think he is anywhere close to scam because of the following reasons:
He gave me full name, his indie company's website his telephone number and more useful info.
He allowed pay pal payment even though he has never used pay pal for much of anything.
He did not start emails with "Dear Sir,"
I was able to talk to him instant and pictures were taken just for this purpose. (make sure they are not general pictures , ask the seller to take specific pictures of the lens' threads and such) Anyway i am sure this seller is responsible and i am willing to use wire for this transaction to save money from those damned pay pal fees. In my opinion it is better to look out for honest people with simply good deals than scammers.
I will update this board on how the transaction turned out.

Re: Why no Ebay?

lol Tony I think you're just overly paranoic. Of course don't buy from anyone and from anywhere if it is suspicious. But the rule of the thumb that is person is valid and as warmstepvision said they provide you with all the information that makes you feel confortable go ahead and buy outside ebay. Btw just because it's ebay doesn't mean you won't get ripped off. Those policies about 'auction is auction is a business commitment' are for many people a joke. Sellers and buyers as well. and I do not think that 10% fee for selling something is really a pocket change. Hmm with DVX it would be like pay $300 to ebay just for listing. $300?? That's like getting a new bogen 503 plus taking your girl out for dinner...So if it does not have to be sold through Ebay do not sell it.

Re: Why no Ebay?

It's not a 10% fee. I've sold tons of crap over the past few weeks and have only been charged about $100 (that includes a DVX).

Of course don't buy from anyone and from anywhere if it is suspicious.

That's the thing, it suspicious that they'd want to sell here instead of Ebay in the first place.

Re: Why no Ebay?

I'm not sure..when you add up all those fees..I sold long time ago a PDA on ebay and with all the placement buy now and price reserve it was $20 in fees on $220 sale. That is 9% my bad... ;D..of course there is no way I would buy anything over $1000 over ebay if it is not a veryfied reseller of the company. And there is no way I would buy DVX on ebay..too much husstle for too little savings, and as someone said before, if you're planning on getting into video industry good deals just do not happen. Deal with the fact that this is expensive fun and buy from certified resellers. So sometimes not even ebay makes the cut when purchasing certain type of equipment.

Re: Why no Ebay?

btw I do not see anything suspicious about someone selling eqipment relevant to DVX. I have bunch of stuff and when I decide to upgrade my tripod or matteblox I would definitely post here first. ;)

my 3 cents

Re: Why no Ebay?

I don't trust any internet buying, but I buy on the net. the rule of internet purchase whether here or ebay, or on a website, is research. You work hard for your cash. I would say no matter where you buy you're gonna find a scammer. that's life! (example. when I bought all my equip. I bought the majority from B& H photo, which was awsome service and fast deliv. but some stuff was out of stock so I ordered from a place called etronics, they had a good review on resseler ratings so I didn't think twice. 2 week's later they still hadn't shipped my product when they stated it was instock. by then it was instock at B&H and so I cancelled and ordered from there. There's nothing wrong about being paranoid. but do your research, that way if your scammed you'll have a way for legal recourse

Re: Why no Ebay?

I agree with Tony. I don't see the harm in posting a link to an Ebay sale. After all, isn't this a marketplace? Whether this is good or not, I would prefer to buy an Ebay item that I saw posted here because it gives a little bit of commonality, though I am sure scams come from here as well. I know Ebay has scams, but at least having the feedback and ways of checking out people provide a little reassurance. I am hesitant to buy straight off of this site unless I am really familiar with the person. PLEASE LET US POST EBAY LINKS!

Re: Why no Ebay?

C'mon, what's the harm... "ebay spam"? whatever, I've never seen any Ebay SPAM around here. Why not let at least the gold members post auctions. I'd rather see a link to an Ebay auction any day than just a bunch of words and an email address. What's the harm? I think that DVXUser is just trying to be like DVInfo without even thinking about it.

Re: Why no Ebay?

Ouch ouch... heh well as an ebay seller i partly agree with tony but there is a little glitch. In my opinion dvxuser should allow members to post a link to ebay search tool (search by seller) along with the account name of the seller. Same link provided by everyone not to spam but to make it a bit easier and to give people like Tony some confidence in the deal. I agree it can turn out sketchy buying gear from someone just from the board. Of course exceptions apply, there are good honest people here and everywhere. We are not all Matchstick Men.

Re: Why no Ebay?

Well, I just sold a Varizoom DVX controller for $60 and a Panasonic DVX mic for $60 on Ebay. Both in perfect condition in their boxes. Hell of a deal... too bad I couldn't post a link to them.

Re: Why no Ebay?

This Marketplace should be for DVXUSER.COM members first and foremost.  It is created for the community:

i.e. I am selling this and want you guys to be the first on the buyers list.

Ebay is so full of scams and bad press that I took a que from Dvinfo.net and used their policy on ebay listings.  If you want to put it on ebay then take it off here.  I cant do anything about you being scammed on this site.  Buyer Beware always comes into play and is strongly urged here as well.  This is the DVXUSER marketplace not a Spam opportunity for ebayers.   I have purchased several items off of here from our members.

Re: Why no Ebay?

I agree, if your' out to buy new gear and have any sense of the internet, your going to be out looking at the different site's and doing you'r research anyway's. whether your buying it here or on ebay, what to you care Tony you sold it on ebay anyway's maybe you want more money, get more people to see your auction. TUFF.... if people were looking for the gear they'll find it here or on ebay, give up the crusade. :P

Re: Why no Ebay?

yeah Tony, you might have sold that stuff here and not had to pay the comission. Unless you just have to sell very fast, put it here first, then if it doesn't work out go to ebay.
