Why no 1080i/29.97?

Avid only offers 1080i/23.98 or 1080i/59.94. Perhaps 1080i/29.97 doesn't "really" exist as a playback format? Yet After Effects provides an option for exporting 1080i/29.97.

Okay, so if I have 30i footage. And I'm exporting it from AE, and my Avid project is 1080i/59.94...what's happening to my uprezzed 1080/30i footage if I export it from AE as 59.94? Is AE adding doubling the fields? Does it matter?

Math is hard!

1080i/59.94 and 1080i/29.97 are the same thing. 59.94 is fields per sec and 29.97 is frames per sec, with two fields per frame the math works out to be the same frame rate. Yes, it's confusing. Just another example of lack of standard terminology.

As far as going to Avid from AE. Set up your AE project using the HDTV 1080 29.97 preset. Render out using fields, set the field order to upper field first. If your Avid project is set to DNxHD you should render out of AE using that codec as well.

Great advice. Thanks. (Duh, of course 29.97 is fps, and 59.94 is fields...I should have realized that--a brain freeze I guess...but I didn't actually stop to realize they were the same in terms of "speed" too.)

You really think I should be rendering 1080/29.97 instead of 1080/59.94. Yes my project is set up as Avid DNxHD/1080i/59.94. Hey, I'll try both and see which one works best, if there is any difference at all. CS3 renders pretty quickly these days...
