HPX250: Why no 1080 Overcranking?

Kunihiko Miyagi addressed this on his blog. He said:
With P2 cards, the memory itself is fast enough to handle the needed speeds, but the current P2 recording systems are not able to reliably handle the necessary speeds, especially with repeated recording and deletion of unneeded portions. Unfortunately, the current line of P2 products are unable to handle 1080/60p recording (including VFR).

Sounds to me like the P2 cards can handle it fine, but perhaps the hardware or the encoder chips aren't designed to handle 2.5x as much data.

Remember, the AC160's overcranking expands the bitrate up to 36mbps, a 1.5x increase, because it's long-GoP. The HPX250 is all intraframe, so going to 60fps would require a 2.5x increase in bandwidth, from 100mbps up to 250mbps. Apparently the current generation of P2 products wasn't designed to handle that. The P2 cards can, but the basic hardware in the camera apparently wasn't designed for that. The HPX250 is using the guts of the HPX370 and original HPX300, and since those cameras can't do it, the HPX250 can't either. I wouldn't be surprised if the next generation of camcorders supports it, I would guess that there's quite a revision being worked on for AVC-Ultra, which is supposed to include such things as 4k, 2k, 1080/60p 4:4:4, and other such niceties. But the existing generation of hardware can't handle all that (except for the P2 cards, which were way overengineered in the first place to provide forward compatibility.)

Thank you much.
So if I needed to shoot a vehicle or person stunt that would end up in slow motion with an HPX250 and ac160, would I be better off shooting 720 60p with the 250 and up resing to 1080 with something like magic bullet instant hd, or shooting 1080 as high of frame rate as possible and simply slowing it down in post? Which would be better?
I'm guessing 1080 and slow motion in post due to resolution.

Avc ultra is going to be great. I wonder how far off. Any guesses? 2 years? ?

I would use 720/60p at the appropriate frame rate rather than trying to post-convert a slower frame rate. Or borrow an ac160 for that shot. ;)

No idea on when we will start seeing avc-ultra stuff.
