Why New Star Wars Sucks

I'm not all the way through it, but I think the guy is pretty funny in a Steven Wright kind of way. And his analysis is pretty accurate in my opinion.

But these are the dangers of being in a position where nobody can really tell you "no". With very few exceptions, the most well-crafted movies come from collaborative conflict, not from one person who can (and does) pretty much anything and everything they want.

That's pretty damn good. His character exercise at the end of Part 1 is genius, I'll have to remember that. But the other videos aren't working right now and I really need to cut some video, so I can't actually search them out right now. Seems like a very educational production for filmmakers.

I can't believe I watched that whole thing, but I couldn't stop. I found the guy hilarious. I grew up near the Wisconsin border so I am acutely familiar with that accent. He totally eviscerates the movie, reaffirming what I thought and pointing out other stupidities I hadn't even noticed. If you want to boil it down the prequels are all plot and little story. They are a constant series of events that drag the characters around, instead of events that happen because of the actions and conflicts of the characters.

Yeah, as much as I love bashing Lucas, I really took notes to apply to my own films. When we focus-group the rough cut of my feature, one of my questions now will be for people to describe the characters the way he did.

And logical flaws are also why it took me a year to write a screenplay. Constantly going back over it back over it, back over it, are they behaving in line with their objectives? Drives me nuts.

Also, his points about light-saber battles are great.

And that happens to bring us to this week's episode of Project Rant
:)

Amazing. Started out thinking I'd watch a minute or two...ended up watching the entire thing!

Just finished. I can't believe I actually watched all of that. Apparently it's more interesting than most feature films, since I haven't been able to finish most at once for a while.

Yep, after successfully dissecting my work day with that, I'm done. I never even made it through the phantom originally but I really enjoyed watching the 'modified' review version. Thanks for putting that up Mark. It really lights up, in big-ass neons, the notion that collaboration *can* be the saving grace of a bad idea.

I take EVERY opportunity during my life when discussing films (and George Lucas is mentioned) to tell those who I am talking with about how Lucas is the MOST overrated director EVER. He has ruined everything he has touched in the last 25 years. Everything... including Indy4. The guy was great at emulating the hero's journey and once that was quickly over has floundered in his own success for almost 40 years. Spielberg has proven himself about 30/32 times... yet Lucas is about 2/5 (he didn't direct V and VI). Besides a New Hope and American Graffiti, the man is a useless boob. Now he throws his money around USC and abolishes celluloid film education.

F$%K GEORGE LUCAS.

Ask me how I really feel.

This guy sounds like Kissell from the Jerky Boys.

"Speak up, I hadda bomb go off near my ear in W W two!"

EDIT: This is really funny stuff, albeit a bit heavy on the dead hooker shtick.

I would buy this on DVD. (it's the same sh*t I've been saying for YEARS, however... search the Indiana Jones/Crystal Skull thread on DVXuser for another amazing separation of "filmmakers" that "get it" and those who don't... I think this reviewer's point about AGE has a lot to do with it... younger "filmmakers" are easily convinced of a film's quality through CGI FLUFF.)

This guy is a genius... I like his fake-idiot-stealthy-smart schtick.

why did it take him 3-6 years to figure it out should be the question !

anyways this is funny and very accurate , wacthing it now ...I should be working :)

that was really good. i loved the part about the characters.

i laughed pretty hard at the part where they're talking about how dangerous anakin is and he is standing right next to them.

I wouldn't normally plug my own stuff in a thread I didn't start, but we published this episode of "Project: Rant" yesterday. I think it sums up the spirit of the discussion."Vader Lava"

People mentioned here about the reason the first three episodes suck is because of lack of collaberation (or, lack of others speaking up when something should be done differently to better serve the story or its impact).

These films, to me, outside of the light saber duels which are totally the director's and editor's fault, suffer from one thing: bad scripts.

That's it.

The REASON the scripts are bad is because George Lucas left it to himself to write them, whereas he wrote the first Star Wars films based solely on Roman and Greek mythology myths.

You can tell by his wretched dialog that George Lucas is now and has always been a horrible writer (heck, besides the actual CHARACTER ARCS, which were STOLEN from myth, the original Star Wars movies are damn near as lame as the new ones. I mean, Obiwon dies in the first one and somehow that matters more to Luke than when the people who raised him die? Really? George was smart to steal all of his character ideas from mythology, sci-fi serials and comic books. If he had left it to himself to develop the character arcs in the later episodes of Star Wars they would have been as wretched as the first three epsidoes.

So, let this be a lesson to crappy writers everywhere. If you want to write a good story, steal one. But under no circumstances should you attempt in any regard to have a single original thought.

And to all good writers, this reviewer's position on how a story or characters should be composed should never, ever, never be adhered to. Thieves and idiots (e.g. George Lucas) need to follow some guidebook regarding story and character. If you DON'T view yourself as a Kubrick or a Tarantino...what the hell are you doing making things for people to watch? Stop!!

Put the pencil down and step away from the camera!!!
