Why is this red X on my screen?

I apologize if this has already been brought up, if it has, please point me in the right direction, but, I am having a pain in the ass problem with my DVX. When I start recording, a red X pops up in the top left of the screen, and when I try to play back that footage, it comes up all glitchy. But when I throw that tape in another deck, it plays back just fine. A buddy of mine is having the same problem as well, and his DVX is brand new. I got a mack warantee, am I gonna have to send it in for repair? ...I dont think I can wait a month for it to be fixed, but I guess I will if I have to. Thanks in advance for your help.

The heads need to be cleaned.

Sometimes turning the camera off then on again will clear the red X. But you really need to clean the head ASAP. I would also suggest reading Barry S' article on how to clean the DVX head (sticky in this section). He's recommending not using a cleaning tape unless you really have to.
