why is the hpx500 cheaper than the sdx900?

The SDX900 used costs more than the hpx500 new. Does Panasonic make any SD shouldermounted cameras anymore? I'd love to get an sdx900 for it's low-light capabilities, but it seems weird that it costs more to buy than it's HD counterpart.

It could just be the R&D costs. A lot of the time that can impact the end user price. It could also just be more expensive to produce.

I would think the fact that it is tape based with alot of moving parts (compared to a P2 anyway) would have a bit to do with the price difference.

from my understanding it cost more because the quality of the chips, DSP, and the menu settings are almost endless as far as painting the camera. A lot of things besides SD or HD go into the price of these things.

I would kill to get a set of three or four of the SDX900's for the triax and CCU they sold for them.

I would think they want to move new purchases into the HD offerings.

Also, maybe they have a nice margin on the P2 cards.

Lets face it, to fill up the HPX-500 you wil spend ~$3,500 on P2 memory.

This is revenue Panasonic did not get when tape cameras were the main attraction.

I see. So then does the SDX900 actually give one more control over the image in camera than the hpx500? Is the HPX2000 more like the sdx900 then?

Also, is anyone interested in selling theirs?

No, instead they used to get $25,000 in revenues when people had to buy the inevitable tape deck. Now, even factoring in the cost of cards, the total cost of ownership for a complete system is MUCH less with the P2 system.

Good point, I did not think of the enormous deck costs!

This is a hidden benefit of solid state media as us lower end consumers can get higher bit rate material into our computers without the need for a deck.

I sometimes get bummed about the memory cost on top of the camera as I reseach my HD upgrade, but it is a better system overall.
